The Souhegan Sabers paid tribute to a fallen former teammate with an emotional win in the Division 2 preliminary round against Hanover on Wednesday night. Riding a wave of feelings of both grief and fond memories of the life of Tony Barksdale who passed away over the weekend at the age of 19, 7th seeded Souhegan seemed to have some kind of "Devine intervention" working on their side in a 55-33 blowout win over #10 Hanover. The Sabers played lockdown defense, took charges and dove for loose balls, much the way Barksdale used to do in his playing days at Souhegan. This game is available for purchase on DVD. Email me at davehaley@nhsportspage.com if you are interested in buying a DVD of any of the games.
Here's the video highlights of the game, along with a clip of Sabers coach Mike Heaney's pregame address to the crowd where he told a funny story about the kind of hard nosed player Barksdale was. After the game we chatted with Hanover coach Tim Winslow, and got reaction from Heaney and Souhegan players Brandon Len(who got special permission from the NHIAA to wear Barksdale's #42 jersey), Jake Kennedy and Tyler Ford.
