Bedford Dental Care Associates Players Lounge Update: James Caparell commits to URI

Written by: Dave Haley

All-state quarterback James Caparell has committed to play his college football at the University of Rhode Island.

Caparell was a four year varsity member of the Bedford high football team and a three year starter at QB. He led the state in passing in both his junior and senior seasons and was our pick as player of the year in each season. During his four year career Caparell amassed 5,389 passing yards (an unofficial state record) with 50 touchdown passes and a completion percentage of 61 %. He also rushed for 1,222 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Caparell helped lead a talented group to championship games in both his junior season (Division III against Portsmouth) and senior season (Division II against Winnacunnet). In addition to being a two-time New Hampshire Sportspage player of the year he was twice an all-state selection by the coaches, ranked as the top quarterback in the state by the Manchester Union Leader and has been nominated to play in both the CHAD East/West all-state game and the annual Shrine game. James also started at power forward for a Bedford team that reached the Division I quarterfinals and was named as an honorable mention all-state pick by New Hampshire Sportspage.

The 900 Degrees Pizzaria Division I & II Post-Season Awards

We finish our postseason awards today with Division I & II and present our 2012 football season highlights video.

The popular opinion back in August was that it would come down to Exeter vs. Pinkerton for a second straight year in the title game and neither team disappointed. The Blue Hawks won their second consecutive Division I title under Bill Ball and the gap between #2 (Pinkerton) and #3 and 4 (Nashua South & Manchester Central) proved to be a bigger gap than any other division in New Hampshire. Division II was the deepest and most competitive race in the state but the team that rose to the top spot early would hold it through the entire season as Winnacunnet won their first football title since 2000.

Today we take a look a look back at what we learned in the 2012 football season as well as recognize the top players, coaches and the game of the year in Division I & II.

 Division II

Player of the Year: James Caparell of Bedford

Completed 153 of 233 throws for 2,265 yards and 25 touchdowns (both best in the state). Also rushed for 536 yards and 11 touchdowns on 87 carries.

Caparell will end his career as one of the all-time leading passers in New Hampshire football history. A Gatorade Player of the Year candidate, he was the best player among a group of very worthy Division II standouts.

Written by: Dave Haley

We start our postseason awards today with Divisions V & VI. The top seeds in each division survived all the way until the final Saturday of the season but when it was over Monadnock had won their first football championship in school history and Franklin had won their first title since 2008.

Today we take a look a look back at what we learned in the 2012 football season as well as recognize the top players, coaches and the game of the year in Division V & VI.

 Division VI

Player of the year:  Jesiah Wade of Campbell

 211 carries for 2,204 yards & 28 touchdowns

Wade was the Campbell offense, often times carrying the ball over 35 times a game, and it was the best offense in the division. In addition to his state leading rushing numbers Wade was the best kickoff & punt returner in the division as well and led his team to the semifinals before they were beaten by eventual champion Franklin.

Runner-ups: Cody Benwell & Jameson Smith of Franklin, Spencer Pierce & Chris Sanborn of Mascoma, Hunter Karwocki of Winnisquam and Tyler Mavicki of Newfound.

We continue our postseason awards with Divisions III & IV. Souhegan and Plymouth both went undefeated in division play but that is where the similarities ended. Souhegan was upset in overtime by a single point against Goffstown in the semifinals while Plymouth hung on for a 7-0 title game win over a very good Trinity football team in a game that wasn't decided until there was less than a minute to play.

Today we take a look a look back at what we learned in the 2012 football season as well as recognize the top players, coaches and the game of the year in Division III & IV.

 Division IV

Player of the Year: Brandon Goodale of Plymouth Regional

161 carries for 1389 yards and 19 touchdowns

The talent and work ethic were always there for Goodale but as a freshman and a sophomore he had to bide his time while Taylor Newberry got the bulk of the carries for the Bobcats. The breakout year really came in 2012 as Goodale led the defensive secondary and finished 9th in the state in rushing as Plymouth won their 19th division title under Hall of Fame head coach Chuck Lenahan.

Runner-ups: Carmen Giampetruzzi & Romeo Masuku of Trinity, Joe Lorenz & Danny Cannone of Windham, Ryan Monette of St. Thomas, John Thomas of Plymouth and Cyrus Rothwell-Ferraris of Hanover.

Justin McIsaac's Top 10 on anything...and everything...sponsored by HK Photography

Written by: Justin McIsaac of WTSN Radio 1270

Before we get to the final Top 10 of the Football season we are happy to announce that after long & contentious negotiations WTSN's Justin McIsaac will be returing in December for a weekly Top 10 for high school basketball. The over/under on terrible officating mentions is set at 7.

Power Polls seem to be all the rage these days- there's two of them just for NH Football alone! So in an effort to keep up with the times, Justin McIsaac of WTSN AM 1270 in Dover is ranking the 10 most important/powerful football type things of the week. At least, how he sees them..

10. GAHHHHHHHHHHHH NOT GRONK!

I was rooting for the Pats to go for 2 up 58-24, mostly because I can't stand the calls of Bob Lamey, the Colts radio play by play guy. The pats kicked the PAT, and Gronk broke his right forearm. I'm way more bummed out about this injury than I should be. Not "Wife just left me" upset, more like "Showed up at a wedding and found out it's not an open bar".  Here's to a speedy Gronk recovery.

9. PARTYING LIKE IT'S (THE YEAR AFTER) 1999

.... Which would be 2000, the last time the Winnacunnet Warriors brought home a state title (a 10-9 win over Exeter).  QB  Ing Hao Veasna went 8-11 for 163 Yards, and the Warriors survived a game Bedford squad, 21-13 to win the D2 title. Winnacunnet might have a claim to the overall crown to, but more on that in a moment.

8. MOTHER NATURE

She's a cruel mistress most of the time, but Saturday we were provided with a Chamber of Commerce day for Championship Saturday. Nice work, Dollface. Now knock it off with the hurricanes.

The Exeter Blue Hawks are Champions once again thanks to a 31-21 victory over Pinkerton in the D1 title game.  It was a packed crowd at Bill Ball Stadium and they were treated to a good one as Astros star running back Manny Latimore kept his team in it with 2 long scoring plays.  Blue Hawks quarterback Ethan Joyce completed only 1 pass all game, but the 27 yard TD strike to Colby Swane with 4:47 to play all but iced it for Exeter.  Galen Antolino led an effective Exeter running game with 111 yards on 14 carries.  His 5 yard TD run in the middle of the 2nd quarter that made it 13-7 Exeter came just 3 plays after a costly Latimore fumble on his own 19.

Tyler Grant also scored a TD and added a 2 point conversion catch and finished his high school career with a 20 carry, 94 yard day.  James "The Wrecking Ball" Vogt had some crushing hits on defense and also scored on a 7 yard TD run.  Latimore ran the ball 21 times for 183 yards, including an 84 yard run that gave his team the early lead and a 78 yard 4th quarter punt return that made it 24-21 Exeter with 9:22 remaining.  Here's the video highlight package of the game as well as our postgame coverage featuring interviews with coaches Bill Ball and Brian O'Reilly, plus a group conversation with Grant, Vogt, Joyce, Swane and Antolino.

Between the Uprights

Almost everybody we talked to had Exeter and Pinkerton penciled in to the Championship game, which was no different from our panel who all picked them as winners.  Winnacunnet did their job vs. BG and Plymouth won the Division IV State Championship, finishing off a perfect season.

Wide Right

I’d love to pick on Justin McIsaac over his Keene pick, but if you’ve seen the video (HERE) you’ll know this game was anything but a gimmee.  Great play down the stretch by Bedford allowed the Bulldogs to move on, and save 4 of us a little face in our weekly picks.  The most surprising pick had to be the Division VI Championship, where each and every one of us had Mascoma Valley defeating Franklin.  Mascoma had been rolling through their competition winning by double digits every week and had even beat Franklin back in Week 1.  But Franklin came to play, to the tune of a 20 point win while proving our entire panel wrong along the way.

The two best teams square off in a final every bit as good the one taking place down the road in Exeter.

There hasn't been a team all year long that has shut down the Bedford offense the way Winnacunnet did in the first meeting between these two teams back on September 7th in holding the Bulldogs to only 55 yards rushing and 111 passing. So it is fair to say that if they are able to duplicate that effort in the championship they will be Division II champs by the end of Saturday.

Don't count on it though. The Warriors still possess the best defense in the division but Bedford has learned to adapt to what the defense has taken away and head coach Kurt Hines has done a great job in showing the patience to stick with the run even when it is not initially working.

A match-up of the two best teams in Division I (some would argue the state..) and probably the first time in their four meetings dating back to last September that Exeter will actually be considered the favorite going in.

Or are they? If you look at Pinkerton's body of of work it has been another dominating season. They opened with a convincing win over Bishop Guertin,  lost a close game to Exeter in week two and then ripped through the Division I schedule with an impressive road win over Brockton (MA) mixed in. Manny Latimore has become the bona fide star we thought he would be two years ago and when head coach Brian O'Reilly describes his two stud linebackers Matt Madden and Matt St. Onge as two of the best he has ever coached you stop and take note.

So a funny thing happened on the way to that Souhegan/Milford championship game..

We'll start with Goffstown who pulled the one legitimate shocker of the 2012 playoffs with their 54-53 overtime victory over top seeded Souhegan. Connor Benjamin, Peter Shea and Ashton Florence kept chasing the Sabers all day long and on this occasion it was Benjamin doing it with his arm as much as his legs.

The all-state quarterback completed 15 of 28 passes for 306 yards, four touchdowns and absolutely, positively, most importantly....no picks. Benjamin had thrown three interceptions the week before against Souhegan and we told you last week a repeat performance would punch their ticket home. Three times Souhegan failed to convert extra points after scores and in the end that was the difference in a one pint game. Lounge member Tyler Ford (313 passing yards) was every bit as good as Benjamin but the conversions cost them in what would be highly respected head coach Mike Beliveau's last game.

10. GOING FOR 2

Goffstown pulled the upset in Amherst by going for the deuce in OT, and it LOOKED like Keene was moving on up after going for 2 with about 45 seconds to play in Bedford. I love it when coaches take risks like that. Good on ya!

9. DEFENSE

Portsmouth was able to lock up Milford and keep them scoreless to move on to a 5th straight title game, and Plymouth was able to keep Trinity off the board in D4. The D5 title game was a defensive minded coaches dream, with tons of hitting and only 9 total points (all scored by Monadnock). There should be a cliché about defense helping to win championships. Maybe I'll come up with one!

8. NUMBERS ON HELMETS

I'm not a fan of having nothing on the side of the helmet. I know it can be cost prohibitive for some schools to put decals on the headgear, but still- if you're not going with a logo the number is a fine replacement, as Monadnock has (I think Concord does too?). That , and the paw print decals for big plays the Huskies had gets a thumbs up from McIsaac.

51 years is a long time to wait for anything.  That’s how long the Monadnock Husky football program has been in existence...each of those years without a NHIAA Football title.  On a brisk fall afternoon in Somersworth, that all changed as Linwood Patnode’s Huskies shut out Somersworth 9-0 to win the NHIAA Division V State Championship.

The Huskies, who were the only team to beat Somersworth all season, were able to shut down the 3 headed rushing attack of QB Drew Francouer, Josh Ream and Kurtis Michaud.  Play after play the Toppers ran their star QB and RBs inside, outside and even tried to throw over the top a few times but to no avail.  The closest Somersworth would get would be a Francouer scamper around the left edge down to the 7 that would get called back midway through the 3rd quarter.   It was a play that gave the Toppers momentum, then quickly took it away at the sight of the yellow flag.

 (4) Goffstown at (1) Souhegan

One week after the Sabers beat the Grizzlies 32-27 at Goffstown the two teams will meet again in Amherst for a spot in the Division III championship next weekend.

In a game where Souhegan was playing for neither their playoff lives or a chance at a top seed (they had clinched both weeks before) Goffstown was able to move the ball up & down the field all afternoon as all-state quarterback Connor Benjamin would rush for 211 yards and running back Peter Shea would go for 101. Goffstown scored three rushing touchdowns and stayed in a back & forth game throughout.

Things are going to get a lot tougher the second time around and the vanilla defense they ran roughshod over will not be making a semifinal appearance.

Benjamin did throw three interceptions in the game and that kind of turnover rate would punch a ticket home on Saturday. This is a tough Souhegan defense that is able to take chances because of their explosive offense.

 (4) Bishop Guertin at (1) Winnacunnet

Box score of the first meeting: http://www.nhsportspage.com/football/game_stats.php?Ateam_id=498&Hteam_id=497&game_id=13514&sport=Football&year=2012-2013

A rematch of a game we covered with video highlights last weekend. Winnacunnet cruised to a 28-14 win in a game that wasn't as close as the score indicates. The Warriors were stopped twice inside the BG five yard line in the final minute of the first half and then chose to kick a short field goal on third down with time winding down. The kick barely missed right and BG was lucky to only be down 21-7 at the half.

As the second half opened Ben Franzoso took all the mystery out of the preceding with his second ‘turn the corner and go 70 plus yards' job of the game and at 28-7 it was over. The Cardinals would tack on a touchdown late for the fourteen point difference.

Travis Cote's defending champions still play sound football and are capable of playing with the best in the state but what they are missing is the home run threat Winnacunnet has with Franzoso, Keene has with Lucas Luopa or Bedford has with James Caparell & his talented group of receivers. CJ Boykins is explosive coming out of the backfield but with his lack of size you need to get him open in space because tacklers aren't going to have a very tough time taking him down as soon as they get their hands on him. Nick Marino has been playing at an all-state level all season but he isn't a 25 carries a night type of running back either. Tom Hurley has a very good arm but does he have great talent at receiver to complement him?

So when two teams that were involved in a 49-0 game meet again in the same season there is only one rational question to be asked; does Manchester Central have any chance to win this football game on Saturday?

They certainly have a punchers chance but they are going to have to play their best game of the year to even give themselves that shot. They'll also likely need a lot of bounces to go their way.

A rematch that Trinity fought very hard to get to and one Plymouth knew was almost inevitable.

Plymouth needed to get the Trinity monkey off their backs after dropping every game to the Pioneers since they moved up to Division IV three years ago. They did exactly that with a 36-14 win on September 15th and go into Saturday's final as the clear favorite.

After a tremendous battle with Windham in the semifinals Trinity returns to the Division IV title game for a fourth straight year. The Pioneers have run Lounge members Romeo Masuku and Ryan Carrier with tremendous success in recent weeks and showed faith last weekend in their offensive line by going for it on 4th down deep in their own end of the field with the games outcome still very much in doubt.

 (2) Franklin at (1) Mascoma

Three years after their neighbors at Lebanon high school came seemingly out of nowhere to win the Division IV championship it is now Mascoma of West Canaan, playing in their first championship game ever, that stands one win away from an improbable title. Much like that Lebanon team this is a Royals squad with a group of seniors that has steadily improved over the past three seasons.

They will play their first ever title game down the road at Hanover high school due to poor field conditions but last week's win at Hanover should ensure they'll be comfortable on the Maruaders field turf again.

 (3) Monadnock at (1) Somersworth

Box Score from the first game: Monadnock 21, Somersworth 14

September 22nd seems like a long, long time ago during this fall HS Football season, but it was a weekend Somersworth hasn’t soon forgotten. The 21-14 loss to Monadnock provided a wake up call for the Hilltoppers, something their team needed to get to where they are today.

Since that game the ‘Toppers have won 6 straight scoring a whopping 186 points (31/game) while giving up only 42 (7/game).  It certainly hasn’t been without hiccups for the #1 seed and Championship favorite.  Namely this past weekend when they came out flat and allowed Stevens to take a 10-7 lead early in the 3rd Quarter before both their offense and defense woke up and put away the Cardinals 27-10.  All season long, when the sledding gets tough they turn to their lead dogs in Preaseason POY pick QB Drew Francoeur and RB Josh “ The Mike Alstott of Somersworth” Ream to power their offense to the goal line.

Between the Uprights

Our whole staff was on point as far as most of the Division IV, V and VI playoff brackets are concerned.  At this point in the season most teams “are who we thought they were” so the picks can be at times anything but exciting.

Wide Right

I had to take a shot to make up ground and I thought Nashua South might have a chance at home to pickup an upset in the final game of the regular season.  A couple of us missed out on Franklin defeating Campbell in a Division VI playoff matchup, which was a tightly contested game.

Pick of the Week

The. Monadnock. Huskies.  The Huskies pulled off the upset of the tournament so far (even though it could be argued they’ve been the better team all year) going on the road and defeating Kearsarge.  Just 2 weeks prior they had lost to Kearsarge, so this was a fairly big upset over the #2 seed.  Both Haley and I had this game all the way, and I think you’ll find we like them again in the Championship.

This week's featured Youtube video is of Souhegan's Tyler Ford

Drew Francoueur & Somersworth will move on to the Division V championship with their come from behind 27-10 win over Stevens. Francoueur rushed for 82 yards and completed 3 of 9 throws for 42 yards in the victory.

CJ Gosselin led Stevens in tackles Saturday and to a lead over top seeded Somersworth at the half. It would not be enough though as the Hilltoppers rallied and ended the season for the Cardinals.

QB Logan Batchelder led his team on two long drives to end the half and had a 40 yard run negated by a holding penalty in Stevens' semifinal loss.

Tyler Ford and Souhegan are the #1 seed in Division III and ended their regular season with a32-27 win over Goffstown. Ford completed 11 of 16 throws for 208 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 41 yards and two scores.

Power Polls seem to be all the rage these days- there's two of them just for NH Football alone! So in an effort to keep up with the times, Justin McIsaac of WTSN AM 1270 in Dover is ranking the 10 most important/powerful football type things of the week. At least, how he sees them...

10. HURRICANES

Sorry there was no Power Poll last week. I was drafted into anchoring our Hurricane Coverage all night on Monday (A Summary: Power is out! It's Raining!), and the rest of the week it was all Charity Food Drive, All The Time at WTSN. Hopefully you and your loved ones got through Sandy unscathed. And, hopefully The Scorpions get some residuals from Rock You Like A Hurricane being played ad nauseam.

9. LAST SECOND WINS

I'll be honest, I was getting a little worried that we weren't going to have a thrilling last second win this year during any football broadcasts on WTSN. That all changed when St. Thomas went to Hanover. Probably the Game Of The Year as far as excitement goes, as STA erased a 28-10 2nd half deficit, including converting on TWO 4th downs on the final drive to get Hayden Middleton in to FG range:

STA moved on to face Plymouth in the playoffs with the win

Ben Franzoso is back and he is back in a very big way.

Two long touchdown runs and more than 225 yards rushing in the first half of a season ending showdown with the defending Division II champions shoud ease any and all concerns about the star running backs recent groin injury.

BG fell behind 21-7 at the half and all their hopes for a big win on the road ran in the other direction when Ben Gareau intercepted a Tom Hurley pass and took it the house for a 28-7 lead that was going to be too much for Bishop Guertin to overcome.

The Winnacunnet Warriors secured the top seed in Division II with the convincing win and will face the Cardinals at home again next weekend.

Just because you're supposed to win doesn't mean its going to come easy, just ask the Notre Dame Fighting Irish who had all they could handle Saturday afternoon from the University of Pittsburgh.

Number four seed Stevens returned to Somersworth looking for a bit of payback from their Week 5 shutout loss but came up less than a half short as the top seed defeated the Cardinals 27-10 Saturday afternoon in a Division V Semifinal.

The early possessions were primarily played between the 30's. With Somersworth holding a slim 6-0 lead (thanks to a Josh Ream rushing TD) Stevens made an impressive drive that culminated in a 30 yard TD around the left side by Donald Pellerin whose diving attempt at the pylon was briefly debated. The TD was ruled good and the ensuing extra point gave the Cardinals a 7-6 lead at the half.

The NHIAA Football playoffs have finally arrived and this kicks off one of my favorite times of year.  Gridiron action is in full swing, the NFL is in mid-season form and the NCAA and NBA are kicking off their basketball seasons.

Today, we look at the Division V race which has been a 4 team race pretty much from the get-go.  Somersworth and Kearsarge proved all year they are the top two teams in Division V and Monadnock and Stevens are not far behind.  Playoffs kick off Saturday afternoon at the home of the top two seeds and NH Sports Page will be back in Somersworth for the rematch with Stevens, who’ll have a healthier Logan Batchelder and revenge on their mind.

Lets take a quick look at how these teams got here...

Welcome to the 2012 Playoff Edition Staff Picks.  We’ll throw in some of the key Division I, II and III matchups that close out the season, but the real focus is on Division IV, V and VI playoffs.  We now know 9 weeks of information about these 20 teams we’ll pick this week, but that doesn’t mean anything when the playoffs come around.  It’s anybody’s game and some teams step up for the postseason, and other’s fold.  Be sure to read up on our playoff previews this week for the following Divisions:

Between the Uprights

The least exciting game on the docket was between Pembroke and Alvirne, but both McIsaac and I saw the Bronco’s coming out on top in a Division III battle that essentially gave the winner a shot at a .500 season.  Which, for these two teams, is something they both want and set goals for at the beginning of the year.  Everybody wants to make the playoffs, but if the balls don’t roll your way, finishing at or above .500 is considered a decent year.

We all had Kearsarge over Stevens, which was an impressive win for a Kearsarge as the game was in Claremont, making the win all that much more impressive. It gives the Cougars a head of steam heading into the Division V playoffs, where they’ll be a favorite to make the Championship game.

 Division IV

 (4) St. Thomas at (1) Plymouth

Remember when we told you in the pre-season this had a chance to be as wide open a division as any in the state? A division with seven good football teams competing for only four playoff spots?

Yeah we were wrong about that..

Plymouth Regional has dominated the division for two solid months and although Windham & Trinity are capable of knocking the top seed off there can be no question that the Bobcats have run the table with relative ease to this point.

Kennett didn't have enough offensive weapons to feature around Nick Massa, Laconia lost pre-season player of the year David Mahoney for a good chunk of the season and a young undersized line got bowled over in the first month of the season. Lebanon continues to look like their championship two years ago was an anomaly and Hanover didn't have enough depth to surround two of the better playmakers in the division.

Before we get to the biggest games of the week  I want to wish Marc Thaler all the best as he moves on from his post as the head football writer at the Manchester Union Leader, the author of his own website NH Game day  and the co-host of the successful Saturday morning New Hampshire High Sports Show heard on WGIR AM 610 and 96.7 The Wave FM.

I've enjoyed getting to know Marc this past year and the numerous times I've been a guest on his show. He's one of a handful of the best sportswriters in the state and writers that good are hard to find. I wish him all the best and hope to work with him again somewhere down the line in the future.

Pete Tarrier will be joined by his still unannounced permanent co-host on Saturday morning between 7 & 9 am and you can listen live online on this link; http://www.wgiram.com/pages/nhhssports.html

 Division I

Pinkerton Academy (8-1) at Nashua South (6-3)

A win by Nashua South gets them the #2 seed and a home playoff game with the Astros next weekend.

I know I was surprised as you were...

Maybe it just feels like Exeter and Pinkerton wrapped up the top two playoff sports weeks ago but Scott Knight's team has won 4 of 5 games and an October 5th victory over Manchester Central came at a time when we all believed Central was the better team. We now know that is not the case.

 (4) Newfound at (1) Mascoma

Box score of the first meeting: http://www.nhsportspage.com/football/game_stats.php?Ateam_id=533&Hteam_id=532&game_id=13663&year=2012-2013

The Newfound offense rode the combination of Tyler Maviki (1,293 yards rushing) on the ground and the arm of Jared Dearborn (1,268 yards passing) to the best start in school history. That kind of balance helped Newfound average 34 points per game during a 6-0 start.  It should come as no surprise then to learn their offense has fallen on hard times since Maviki went down with an injury that may keep him out of Saturday's rematch with Mascoma.

Newfound has scored just 21 points in their last 12 quarters of play and against an offense as good as Mascoma 21 points in one game wouldn't cut it. Newfound has to find ways to get that balance back (Maviki's ability to play will likely be a game time decision) if they have any chance to beat Mascoma. A week ago Dearborn put the ball up 29 times and that's just too one dimensional. Newfound has to move the ball on the ground against the best defensive line ion the division or their playoff stay will be a very short one.

The Sentinel Title Services Game of the Week: Trinity 42, Windham 7

In a game that would determine home field advantage for the Division 4 semifinals next week, the Trinity Pioneers(8-1) showed D4 newcomer Windham(7-2) they’ve still got some work to do if they’re going to compete for a Championship this season.  The Pioneers made a statement right from the opening drive as they marched down the field for a touchdown.  Trinity would keep the pressure on Windham on both sides of the ball throughout the rest of the 1st half, and when kicker Justin Johnson nailed a 32 yard FG as time expired in the 2nd quarter, the lead had grown to 35 to nothing and we were looking at running time and a bigtime blowout.

When the offense wasn’t moving up and down the field, the Trinity defense was absolutely stifling the Windham offense to the tune of only 1 first half 1st down and holding them to under 100 yards total offense on the night.  The Jaguars didn’t get their 2nd 1st down until late in the 3rd quarter, and that came courtesy of a Trinity facemask penalty.  Windham finally broke into the scoring column on a 10 yard Kellin Bail TD run with 2:31 left in the game.  The score came just a few plays after a botched long snap on a Trinity punt attempt that gave Windham the ball on the Pioneers 20.

Between the Uprights

Pinkerton and Con-Val were the lone correct unanimous selections this week.  Fairly straightforward for Con-Val who won big over Merrimack Valley, and the Astro’s victory over Concord was also another most would have picked.  Pinkerton continues a very impressive string of victories since their early season loss to Exeter, and now looks to be the favorite to meet the Blue Hawks in the Division I finals.  Its shaping up for quite a finish in these last couple of weeks with playoff seedings on the line.

What happened to me last week?  3-7 won’t cut it when it comes to this panel.  All of a sudden I’m just trying to stay out of the basement.  As a crew we whiffed on 2 matchups collectively as both Kennett and Bow were unable to win their matchups vs. Laconia and Sanborn.  Bow had won three and a row and really needed this win, at home no less, to try to sneak into that last Division V playoff spot.  Kennett had recently lost to Trinity and Windham but had to feel good about their chances against a Laconia team that had also been struggling.  Tough calls on our part but admittedly, we missed big time.

Manchester Central (5-3) at Pinkerton Academy (7-1)

The coverage of Manchester Central is sponsored by 900 Degrees Pizzaria

Welcome to the playoff implications addition of the Thursday Thoughts. I was sure I was going to come up with a better name than that but it never came to me...

The Astros playoff ticket is punched but The Little Green still need a win to be assured of a spot and coming off of a loss to Division III leading Souhegan does not put them in the best frame of mind at the most critical time of the season.

The Souhegan game started on Friday in Amherst and ended Saturday in Manchester with about 10 gallons of rain falling in between. Other than that it was nothing out of the ordinary...

No matter where it was played and how dry it might have been both teams played their best players and Central was beaten. Now they turn around and play a team a lot of people feel like is only weeks away from a championship game rematch with Exeter and playing their best football of the season.

Justin McIsaac's Top 10 on anything.....and everything..sponsored by Sentinel Title Services

Power Polls seem to be all the rage these days- there's two of them just for NH Football alone! So in an effort to keep up with the times, Justin McIsaac of WTSN AM 1270 in Dover is ranking the 10 most important/powerful football type things of the week. At least, how he sees them...

10. D2's DEPTH

Spaulding was hanging tough with BG on a muddy turf, West (Who go blown out of the building last week by Spaulding) upset Keene, which gives West a shot to get in to the Playoffs if they win out, and Keene stumbles. IT'S ANYONE's DIVISION!

9. RAIN

Mother Nature is a cruel mistress. Most games were rained out Friday night (I could do a whole column about rained out football games, but that's another story) , but I was in Portsmouth for the Clippers contest vs Pembroke- it was a great game to watch inside a pressbox... unfortunately, we were NOT in the refrigerator  sized Portsmouth Press box, and got to experience the elements first hand. In other news, I'm now sending demos to desert states.

8. SENIOR NIGHTS

A fellow NH HS Media member sent me an e-mail with the subject line "The Seniorest of Senior Nights". Evidently a volleyball game covered by our friend had a :30 minute senior night, where the seniors on the team were recognized and honored by their parents, their grandparents, their aunts, their uncles, their mailmen.... You get the picture. Even some FANS were recognized for coming to all the games. I'm all for senior night, but let's get these things under control before they turn into "My Super Sweet 16".

Between the Uprights

In retrospect, what happened last weekend at Dover High School is exactly what should have.  The Bedford Bulldogs, who are playing for playoff seeding, went on the road and struggled against a Dover team eager for a quality win to stay in the playoff conversation.  The Bulldogs closed that game out with a drive in the final minutes to defeat the Green Wave.  Nobody said it was easy playing road games in the NHIAA.  Fairly straightforward pick for our staffers.

Wide Right

Two big ones we all missed on this week (glad I don’t have to single myself out again).  First of all, Pinkerton surprised everybody by traveling down to Brockton and defeated the Boxers in their series finale.  A very good win for the Astro’s momentum heading into the final few games of the season.  The other game that really surprised our panel was Nashua North holding serve at home vs. Concord.  Last week I mentioned these two programs were headed in different directions (North had lost 4 in a row).  Perhaps that got passed around the North locker room because they came out and beat a Concord team who had won 3 of their last 4.

 Division I

Pinkerton Academy (6-1) at Concord (4-3)

Two teams with an eye on the playoffs that had very different weekends five days ago.

Concord gained the upper hand on the final playoff spot a month ago with a win over Nashua South on September 22nd but gave it right back in dropping a 22-21 decision to Nashua North last weekend.

What it means is that the Tide no longer control their own destiny and that is not a fun scenario to be facing when you have the Astros coming to town. A loss here means that Concord would have to beat Salem next weekend (likely) and then hope for Nashua South to lose to either Manchester Memorial at home or Londonderry on the road in the final weeks of the season and those two teams have a combined record of 3-8 in division play. That as they say is a lot of moving parts.

Can we now agree that the loss to Nashua North was a big one?

Power Polls seem to be all the rage these days- there's two of them just for NH Football alone! So in an effort to keep up with the times, Justin McIsaac of WTSN AM 1270 in Dover is ranking the 10 most important/powerful football type things of the week. At least, how he sees them....

10. JOINING GAMES IN PROGRESS

We carry the Yankees on WTSN, so Friday night they were finishing off the Orioles while I was waiting.... and waiting..... and waiting to join the Spaulding vs West game in progress. The first half was a great 24 minutes of Football, with The Red Raiders holding a 21-14 lead. Spulding busted out in the 2nd half to win 50-22.

9. TREY SCOTT ON TURF

Trey Scott, Spaulding's junior RB/DB, is faster than a reality star's fall from grace, and that's when he's playing on the muddy grass of Hugo Bolin field in Rochester, a surface that resembles oatmeal on it's BEST days (I'm pretty sure every fall team uses the football field at Spaulding, including cross country, and the little known Monster Truck team).  On West's field turf surface, he was UNSTOPPABLE. Running for 147 and 3 TD's, Scott lead Spaulding to a big win.

8. WAIT, THERE'S RULES AGAINST COMPLAINING ABOUT THE REFS?

Winnacunnet coach Ron Auffant was not present for Friday's 20-7 loss at Keene, after being suspended by the NHIAA for one game for saying (in the Portsmouth Herald) "You go over there, you're playing against a lot of factors... It's a long trip. A lot of times officiating doesn't go your way. We've just got to get off the bus and play four quarters."

The Weathervane Seafood Restaurants Game of the Week: Monadnock 32, Sanborn 7

If you want to compete and be in the top 4 in Division V, you better be able to play defense.  On a cool, blustery afternoon in Kingston the Huskies of Monadnock waltzed in and shut down the Sanborn Indians offense, and rushed their way to a 32-7 victory.

The win puts the Huskies at 5-1 in the division, with just a opening season loss to the Stevens Cardinals the only blemish on their resume.  Sanborn, desperately seeking that quality win they’ve yet to achieve likely are on the outside looking in when it comes to the Division V playoff picture.

The damage was done early and often on the turf by the Huskies.  Dylan Lane, Drew Bolewski and Dylan Bell combined for 323 yards on the ground and 4 TDs.  In fact, there wasn’t one yard gained through the air the entire afternoon.  The Huskies, who are a much bigger squad in general, controlled the line of scrimmage and were able to gain yards up the middle, off tackle and around the edge at will.

Between the Uprights

We all nailed several games this week including Pinkerton, Newfound, Alvirne, Bedford and Winnacunnet.  A fairly straightforward schedule for Week led to all of us picking at least 8 of 10.  Additionally, the Somersworth pick, despite their 27-0 margin of victory, was a really good pick before the game.  Stevens got decimated throughout the game by injuries and it certainly would have been different if they'd been able to keep their key players on the field.

Wide Right

No question, our unanimous pick of Manchester Central over Nashua South was our biggest miss.  On paper, in the oh-so-popular power polls, and  on the forum message boards, Central was the better team.  Nobody saw the game Trevor Knight had coming.  All he did was account for 4 TDs including a 70-some-odd scamper in the waning minutes of the game.  Not bad for a nights work.  South improved to 3-1 and showed they are for real.

Pick of the Week

Even though we all picked this game right, the Alvirne pick over Con-Val was the pick of the week.  Both teams came in with only one victory, both winning vs. Merrimack Valley.  Really a toss up game where both teams needed a win to stay in playoff contention.  The friendly confines of Bronco Stadium surely paid off in this case.

Keene celebrated homecoming weekend with an impressive 20-7 victory over previously unbeaten Winnacunnet Friday night at Alumni Field.  Alex Austin scored a pair of quick TDs in a 90 second span at the end of the 1st quarter and early in the 2nd turning a 7-0 Winnacunnet lead into a 14-7 Keene advantage.

The Blackbirds defense did the rest holding the Warriors off the scoreboard after Winnacunnet's 1st possesion ended in a 1 yard IngHao Veasna touchdown run.  Both teams are now 4-1 in a very close Division 2 playoff race that also includes 4-1 BG and 5-1 Bedford.  Check out the video highlights of the game courtesy of our camerman Jon Kesty along with a postgame interview with Austin, QB Lucas Luopa and defensive stud Jimmy Heaney and a one on one with coach John Luopa.

 Division I

Pinkerton Academy (5-1) at Brockton (MA.) (3-2)

The Boxers annually give the Astros their toughest game of the season and last year this was the contest that seemed to knock an undefeated Pinkerton team off the rails a bit.

Pinkerton was 6-0 going into a home contest with a 2-3 Brockton team still struggling to find its way. The Astros were one week removed from a 42-16 shellacking of #2 Exeter and head coach Brian O'Reilly was actually getting asked if this was one of the best Pinkerton teams of all time (he predictably wasn't taking the bait). Remember that was a team that outscored the three other Division I playoff teams 147-44 in their three match-ups. Consider how dominant those numbers are.

Brockton though beat Pinkerton that day and it seemed to be a big blow to the Astros confidence. They went on to finish the Division schedule undefeated but they got all they could handle in a semifinal battle with Salem where Jerrickson Federick and the Blue Devils were in that game until the end. A week later they faced Exeter again in the championship, and we all know how that movie that ended.

So does the Brockton game represent an opportunity to get a bounce in the right direction for the Astros this time around? Brockton has been led by senior QB Austin Roberts and has been up (a victory over Xaverian for the first time since 2007) and down (an upset loss to Reading) which pretty much sums up a 3-2 record.

Justin McIsaac's Top 10 on anything....and everything..Sponsored by Merrimack Valley Sports

Power Polls seem to be all the rage these days- there's two of them just for NH Football alone! So in an effort to keep up with the times, Justin McIsaac of WTSN AM 1270 in Dover is ranking the 10 most important/powerful football type things of the week. At least, how he sees them....

 10. TWIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITER FIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHTS!!!

Without getting into any specific details of the awesome Power Poll inspired Twitter rumble that went down, let me just say that Twitter fights are one of my top 5 favorite things about the internet (Also on that list: Drew Magary, Gangnam Style, This Site, and the Chinese sites that I may or may not buy bootleg sports jerseys from). There is never a winner in a Twitter fight, aside from the audience.

 9. BAD NIGHT FOR STEVENS

Stevens vs Somersworth was probably the most anticipated game of the week, with Chanel 9 on the scene, WTSN carrying the game, Elliot overcoming his fear of being on camera to cover it, you name it. Unfortunately, QB Logan Batchelder was injured early on (He didn't look 100% to start the game), and Stevens had to use a quasi-single wing, and the end result was a 27-0 Somersworth victory. Take nothing away from the Hilltoppers (one of my Homer teams) but I'd like to see a playoff rematch with everyone at 100%

Between the Uprights

Week 5 was probably the easiest of our weekly 10 game slate to date.  With Tarrier and Kesty going 9-1, McIsaac 8-2 and Haley and I going 7-3 (yes, even the Editor finally got 70% correct) there were a number of games we all agreed upon, and picked correctly.  Exeter, Pembroke, Keene, Winnacunnet and Central were all unanimous picks, and all were victorious, and by a good margin in each game (other than Keene who squeaked by Spaulding on a very muddy field).

Wide Right

From time to time we all go out on a limb, and my picks of Goffstown and Nashua North were off base.  In retrospect I should have  taken the safe play, but thought both teams would step up in what was a big game for both them.  They were on the road against higher ranked teams with better records, so, perhaps I should’ve known better.  My only solace is that Haley also picked North, assisting me in saving face and keeping us both at 7-3 last week.

Pick of the Week

The Bedford Bulldogs, going on the road, against a higher ranked team shocked a lot of coaches, fans, and of course media members.  In what was their game of the year to date and QB James Caparell and Co. came out and put a 27-13 exclamation point on the Cardinals.  They had no answer for Caparell who had 2 TD’s throwing the ball and 1 rushing. A very nice win for Bedford.  Tarrier and myself were the only to pick the Bulldogs to come out of that one on top.

The Stevens Football team bus showed up late, just under an hour before kickoff, and things never really got any better from that point on.  Somersworth RB Josh Ream rumbled his way to 198 yards and a touchdown, and the Hilltopper defense held the Cardinals scoreless resulting in a 27-0 victory for the home team Friday night.

Stevens was playing from behind from the get-go, and halfway through the second half, threatening deep in Somersworth territory after a nice punt return, QB and Players Lounge Member Logan Batcheldor never came out on the field to lead the offense.  His knee injury, coupled with WR Billy Brooks missing the game due to a shoulder injury, really put the Cardinals in a tough spot in this game.

Check out the game highlights, and interviews with Somersworth coach Dan Hodson and Player of the Game, Josh Ream, in the video below. (Video by NH Sportspage staff videographer Jon Kesty)

 Division I

Nashua South (3-2) at Manchester Central (4-1)

The coverage of Manchester Central is sponsored by 900 Degrees Pizzaria

Here is what we think we know about the Division I race after four games; that we are clear on who three of the four playoff teams are. In fact most of us think we knew that back in late August. Those three teams are Exeter, Pinkerton and Central and today they sit one & tied for two in the standings.

Here is what we didn't know; who is going to be that fourth playoff team? A lot of those same voices thought it was going to be Nashua South but that may have been before a 20-3 loss at Concord two weeks ago that put them on the wrong end of a tie-breaker with the Crimson Tide.

What that means is that the Panthers are going to have to steal one from the big three and their best chance may come this weekend.

Trevor Knight and Co. slogged through the rain on an evening when most people took the night off and gained a nice win over Nashua North (in a game we have full video highlights of). Now they're going to show us if they are the team that beat Spaulding, Salem and North impressively or the team held to under 80 yards in three quarters of play against Concord.

Manchester Central bounced back from a 2 game offensive funk with an impressive 42-13 win over city rival Manchester Memorial on Saturday afternoon at Chabot-McDonough Field. Quarterback Riley Cote had a huge 1st half with 220 yards passing and 2 TD's as the Little Green jumped out to a 26-6 lead at the break. Cote threw 2 more touchdowns in the 3rd quarter to up the lead to 42-6. He finished the day 13 of 21 for 237 yards and 4 TDs before being relieved by sophomore back up Richie Greely midway thru the 3rd quarter. Hector Velez was asked to carry the load for Central on the ground with fellow running back David Weekly out sick for the game. Velez responded with 148 yards with 2 touchdowns on 14 attempts. Troy Pelletier caught 2 of the 4 Cote touchdown passes. Abe Madra and Jeme Aguilar had the other 2 Central TD grabs as the lopsided score turned it into a "running clock" for most of the 2nd half. By rule, this happens when a team goes up by 35 points or more in the 2nd half.

As we have for over five years we will highlight the weekly performances of our Players' Lounge members by running down their statistical performance as well as their teams. Each week we will also be featuring the highlight video or game footage of a lounge member.

Athletes can join the players' lounge by registering on our website at a cost of just $25 a year. Becoming a member is a way to have your performance highlighted to over 3,000 daily readers and it also supports the work we do in covering New Hampshire high school sports. Lounge players are also eligible for our Recruiting videos done by our videographer Jon Kesty.

This week's featured YouTube highlight footage is of Trinity's Romeo Masuku

James Caparell and Bedford earned one of the biggest wins in program history in coming from behind to beat Keene 25-24 on the road Friday night. Caparell was sensational in completing 21 of 30 passes for 331 yards and three touchdowns as well as running for 63 yards and a score.

Brian Collins continues to state his case as the best wide receiver in the New Hampshire with 6 catches for 150 yards and a touchdown in the win.

Keene QB Lucas Luopa was great even in defeat as he rushed for 179 yards in the Blackbirds first loss of the season to go along with completing 11 of 22 passes for 140 yds. and a touchdown.

Power Polls seem to be all the rage these days- there's two of them just for NH Football alone! So in an effort to keep up with the times, Justin McIsaac of WTSN AM 1270 in Dover is ranking the 10 most important/powerful football type things of the week. At least, how he sees them....

10. JOHN MOSS OF DOVER LAYING THE LUMBER

Dover took a tough 27-7 defeat Saturday on WTSN, in a game that was probably a bit closer than the score might indicate. John Moss, who's listed at 5'11 185,(looked bigger to me) was punishing BG runners that came through the middle of the line.

 9. WINNI WINS ONE FOR D2

Story of the week had to be the Warrior's big win over rival Exeter, who had looked unbeatable prior to Friday night's contest. Not to put the cart before the horse, but if both Exeter and Winnicunnet go on to win State Titles in D1 & D2, will Winni put "D1,D2 State Champs" on the banner? Because I totally would.

 8. KEVIN KICZUK READS THE ZONE

In the Dover BG Game (Video Highlights of which are here on NHSportspage.com), late in the 2nd Quarter, BG faced a 4th and 10 from the Dover 40. QB Thomas Hurley hit Kiczuk at the 20, and Kiczuk did the rest for the TD, but after the game BG Coach Travis Cote revealed that it was Kiczuk that mde the read to sit down in the zone coverage- good call.

Every week I will be emailing with three professionals covering New Hampshire sports to get their thoughts, opinion and local expertise on the high schools in their area. We'll share those emails with our readers and will be talking with a different set of writers & broadcasters every week.

This week's guests are Greg Fennell from the Valley News, Randy Booth, sports editor at the Laconia Citizen and Marc Thaler the longtime sportswriter for the Union Leader and radio co-host of the New Hampshire High School Sports Show.

Our first guest columnist is Greg Fennell. Greg covers teams like Lebanon, Hanover and Mascoma for the Valley News ( http://www.vnews.com/ ) and offers great insight into teams in the western part of the state that don't always get the same state wide coverage as schools from Nashua, Manchester or the seacoast.

Question: The final score may have looked lopsided but Hanover was able to compete with Plymouth for three quarters in a game you covered on Saturday. Do you feel like Hanover still has a chance to end up as one of the four playoff teams in Division IV?

Greg Fennell: I do. Clearly, the duo of Windham and Plymouth are the class of the division (and I'd love to be a fly on the wall of that game next weekend). After that, watching how well Hanover played for the first half with the Bobcats leads me to believe they can stay longer with squads such as St. Thomas or Trinity, depending on how physical the Saints or Pioneers are. Plymouth simply wore Hanover out, as I suspect they do and will to most opponents this season.

Between the Uprights

Our whole staff nailed several of the picks this past week.  Maybe they were no-brainers, or maybe we were just lucky.  In the case of Windham and Pinkerton I think we all chalked those up right away, while the Souhegan and Keene wins looked straightforward on paper, they both ended up having interesting outcomes.  Alvirne played Souhegan tight the entire game, and even held the lead into the 3rd quarter, while the Keene and Goffstown coaches sat their starters - for the whole game!  We all know by now why, and that next year that shouldn’t happen with the new alignments, but it certainly made making these predictions a bit dicier when you’re contemplating JV players performances.  At least they told us ahead of time...this time.

Wide Right

I wasn’t the only media member who picked Central to upset #1 Exeter, IN Exeter, on a night when emotions were riding high, but it sure felt like it in the NHSportsPage.com offices.  I was banking on the age old saying of “good offense beats good defense”.  That’s what they say right? No?  Unfortunately for me, not only does Exeter have an excellent defense, but clearly they have a really good offense too, and they showed it last Friday in taking care of Central early in that game.  For the Little Green, I think they are still a capable football team with all the pieces they need to make a postseason run, but they’ve got to get their confidence back. That said, I won’t make the same mistake twice, I’m officially drinking the Blue Hawkade on Friday Nights from now on.

Pick of the Week

Justin McIsaac jokingly (I think) wondered where Winnisquam was on a map last week in an email exchange between our panel.  Despite his lack of geography outside the greater Seacoast region, that pick, and his even better selection of Plymouth over Trinity  were last weeks top picks.  McIsaac has a commanding 2 game lead at this point, but based on his picks this week he might be reaching on a few of them which could allow the pack to trickle back to the leader.

 Division I

Nashua North (2-1) at Manchester Central (2-1)

The coverage of Manchester Central is sponsored by 900 Degrees Pizzaria

A match-up that may feel like a consolation game after both Nashua North & Manchester Central were beaten convincingly by Pinkerton & Exeter last weekend but this game actually puts the winner in good shape heading towards October.

For Central (in a game we covered with full video highlights) it all went wrong in a hurry and at the end of the game head coach Ryan Ray said it looked his entire team was running in quicksand. Tyler Grant came over the top as the safety help and picked off a Riley Cote pass in the end zone and lounge member Troy Pelletier couldn't haul in several passes that he catches on most nights.

On the other side the execution was much better and Central simply couldn't get Exeter off the field. If that 49-0 result happens in early November Coach Ray knows he is outmanned, in early September you take the beating, adjust and move on. Count on Central to do just that.

The Woodlands Credit Union Game of the week: Plymouth 36, Trinity 14

Date Posted :

Written by: Dave Haley

Plymouth's Hall of Fame head coach Chuck Lenahan has been in enough games to have perfected the art of downplaying the big ones. Especially the ones played early in the season.

They don't hand out trophies in September and no one walked away with a title Saturday afternoon but Plymouth had to prove they could beat Trinity and there is a big difference between feeling you are capable of winning a title and proving it.

Well let it be made very clear; Plymouth proved it on Saturday afternoon.

So if Coach Lenahan wants to quickly move on from his teams 36-14 dismantling of the team that beat them for the Division IV championship just ten months ago his players have earned the right to let it soak in a little. QB Colin Sullivan made big plays time & again by throwing the ball and extending drives with his legs. John Thomas was huge with both a rushing touchdown and a 60 yard interception he took to the house for an early lead for the Bobcats. Brandon Goodale was the best running back on the field and added not only a receiving touchdown but an interception as well in the victory.

Jon Kesty brings you highlights from the game as well as my pre-game analysis and post-game interview with Sullivan, Goodale and Coach Lenahan in our Woodlands Credit Union Game of the Week.

It’s mid-September, which means the offseason rust has finally worn off, cleats are broken in and those summer tans are just beginning to fade.  It also means by the end of the weekend there will be separation between the top and the bottom of the divisionsal standings with a whole slew of teams somewhere in the middle.

The same could be said for the NHSportsPage’s Staff Picks with WTSN’s Justin McIsaac leading the pack, a full 4 games ahead of our fearless leader, Dave Haley, who’s even at 10 - 10. Lets take a quick look back at Week 2...

Between the Uprights

Central defeating Concord (on the road) was far from an easy pick. Concord has been playing very good football this season and they’re a program on the upswing who comes to play every single game.  Good win for Central, they’ll have to do it again this weekend when they face off in another premier matchup in Exeter.  4 of our 5 panelists had Central picked correctly.

Wide Right

It’s never good to be the only panelist to pick a losing team as I did with Winnisquam against Newfound. Especially when that team loses by 23 and gives up 42 points.  I’ll shrug that off and point out I still went 7 - 3 and sit comfortably in 2nd place in the standings.  In a closer game, Jon Kesty had Concord vs. Central but we know how that turned out.

Pick of the Week

Winnacunnet has been a team, who, without playing a home game in their first 2 matchups, has slid under the radar all pre-season and into the early portion of the fall schedule.  While Kesty and I both had 2 of the worst picks of the week, we also had the one of the best, picking the Warriors over a tough Bedford squad at home.  Winnacunnet won’t be surprising anybody the rest of the way, they’re now a bonafide top 10 team in the State and will be looking to make a run for a Championship in November.

 Exeter wins one for Cody

It was an emotional week in Exeter.  Coming off the high of a big win over Pinkerton last Saturday, the Blue Hawks felt the low of the sudden loss of one of their teammates just days later.  Earlier on Friday afternoon, the Exeter football team attended the wake of 16 year old Sophomore Cody Brackett.

Needless to say the defending Champs were playing this one for their fallen friend.

Our second ‘Game of the Year' in as many weeks and once again Exeter is prominently involved. Nothing like getting the biggest games of the year out of the way by mid-September and Central this Friday night poses a different set of problems than Pinkerton did a week ago.

The Astros beat you by running the football, winning the special teams battle and controlling field position. They're not going to beat you through the air and in fact their biggest pass play of the game against Exeter was a throw from converted running back Chris St. Onge for 50 yards (a play you can see on our game video of last weekend's championship rematch). In Central they'll face an experienced QB in Riley Cote who is likely to exceed the 25 passes Exeter has had thrown against them in two games this season all by himself.

 10. LIGHTNING DELAYS

Despite the fact that nobody aside from the ref's could actually see the lightning, the game I had on WTSN Friday night (Portsmouth @ Souhegan) was delayed about an hour. I don't feel like the delay had much of an effect on the outcome, but getting HS kids out of the zone for an hour is never good. West vs BG was a victim of this as well. KNOCK IT OFF, MOTHER NATURE.

 9. TIGHT ENDS WIFFING ON TD CELEBRATIONS

I'm looking at YOU, Vernon Davis and Gronk. I'm sure some writer will climb Mount Pious and talk about how offensive celebrations in the NFL. My money's on Gregg Easterbrook. For the record, I didn't see any HS TE's whiffing on spikes or goal post slam dunks.

The Bottomline Realty Game of the Week: Exeter 24, Pinkerton Academy 20

Tyler Grant led the way with 195 yards rushing and 2 long TD runs as Exeter staked their claim as the undisputed #1 team in NH with an early season 24-20 win over Pinkerton.  The game was indeed a rematch of last year's surprising Exeter upset of the Astros in the Division 1 Championship Game, but both teams suffered huge graduation losses and were looking to put the 2011 season behind them.

Exeter lost 20 seniors off the title team, including their entire outstanding offensive line.  But the new group up front for Coach Bill Ball looked just as good creating holes for Grant and the rest of the Blue Hawk ball carriers who gashed the Astros defense for well over 250 yards on the ground.

The NH Sports Page Week 2 HS Football Picks sponsored by Bob Hayden

The NH Sports Page staff came out with a bang going a combined 31 - 19. That said, there were a couple of picks we hit perfectly as a group, and a few that provided some bulletin material for a locker rooms. Before we get into this weeks picks let's recap last week's performance.

 Between the Uprights

We all nailed several matchups in Week 1 right down the middle including Exeter, Keene and Pinkerton. Two of those teams, defending D-I champ Exeter, and D-I runner-up Pinkerton, throw down in what is the game of the weekend in the New Hampshire.

 Wide Right

Without a doubt, Winnacunnet's shocking 41 - 7 victory over Souhegan, on the road no less, was the biggest upset last week as each of our 5 panel members had them losing to the Sabers. A big matchup looms with Bedford Friday night, and we'll be picking that one as well this week.

 Pick of the Week

Pete Tarriers was the only panelist to correctly pick Nashua South's 35 - 20 win over Spaulding. In retrospect, you've got a D-I team vs. D-II, it should have been easy right? But with a long ride to Rochester you just never know how a team is going to lumber off that bus just waking up from an hour nap. Nice pick by our resident on-air talent, Pete Tarrier.

The Winnacunnet Warriors don't mind being overlooked.  As a matter of fact, they thrive on it.  Case in point, after a rare season where they didn't make the playoffs last year, not many people(including me) thought enough of the Warriors to rate them as a playoff contender in Divsion 2 heading into this season.  After the 1st 2 weeks in 2012 they are quickly changing minds...winning games and winning respect in the process.

 Division I

Exeter (1-0) at Pinkerton Academy (1-0)

The coverage of Exeter high school is sponsored by Chad Fletcher at Blue Water Mortgage

Hey did you hear this is a rematch of last year's Division I championship game? A game in which Exeter upset heavily favored Pinkerton 23-13?

The talk of the pre-season, four to five weeks before this game was actually going to be played, has two veteran coaches doing their best coach-speak ("We won't give one moments thought to (insert Pinkerton or Exeter) until we are through with our first game") and Astros head coach Brian O'Reilly perilously close to pulling a Jim Everett on the Jim Rome Show the next time our own Pete Tarrier asks him about Exeter. The good news for both head coaches is they won't be asked any more questions about the other once this one is over with sometime late Saturday afternoon.

Power Polls seem to be all the rage these days- there's two of them just for NH Football alone! So in an effort to keep up with the times, Justin McIsaac of WTSN AM 1270 in Dover is ranking the 10 most important/powerful football type things of the week. At least, how he sees them....

 10. POWER POLLS

There's the WMUR/UNION LEADER/WGIR Power Poll, and the NASHUA TELEGRAPH/WGAM Power Poll. All for a state with one area code! There are more voters in these polls than there are football teams in NH (Editors Note: Hyperbole). It does get people talking about HS Football, and creates arguments about which poll is more legit, so that's a good thing. I think someone should do a power poll of power poll voters- I'd do it, but I'm far too lazy.

 9. SPAULDING'S CROWD

My Alma Mater, Spaulding in Rochester, had gone about 0-8235 over the past few seasons, until last years turnaround. They had an over-flow crowd for the opening night contest against Nashua South at Hugo Bolin field, and even in the 2nd half when Spaulding was down 21 and both teams had their 2nd units in, the crowd remained to vociferously root on the JV kids. They're pumped for a big season.

With all-state running back Ryan Monette chewing up yards out of the backfield, a trio of all-state caliber receivers to spread the field & a quarterback with the size & skill to deliver time & time again the St. Thomas offense was able to score often, and quite often in a hurry.

 But that was last year.

You have to crawl before you can walk and an offense with a lot new faces and a completely re-vamped offensive line may still be very good by year end but needed to prove that they could win a grind it out affair early in a new season. Consider that task completed.

"I thought we moved the ball very well, it was the turnovers in the redzone that hurt us. Those were situations where we could have put points on the board," said St. Thomas 2nd year head coach Eric Cumba. " For the most part the new kids who were in this kind of situation for the first time in their lives did a very good job. We've got stuff to work on but this was a good team we beat."

In regards to the argument that a state as small as New Hampshire has no business having six football divisions is there a better example of that than the fact that two of those divisions don't even have a defending champion as an active member? Or the school that was beaten in the title game either?

Add Division VI to the list of orphaned division champions.

Inter-Lakes-Moultonborough & Epping-Newmarket have left and moved up to Division V. In their wake remains 10 teams who all think they have a chance to be the last team standing.

 Today we take a look at a division with two new members and one clear cut favorite;

In a division that’s been dominated by the same 2 teams the last few years,  it’s not exactly going out on a limb picking Souhegan and Portsmouth as the front runners in D3 for 2012.  But as usual, that’s what we have this season as the Clippers and Sabers very well could be on a collision course come November once again.  Of course, past performance doesn’t necessarily guarantee future results.

Town and county fairs are popping up from Stratham to Lancaster, which means all around the State high school football hopefuls are strapping on shoulder pads and lacing up cleats.  Today, we focus in on an interesting Division that’s had a lot of movement since undefeated St. Thomas conquered Division-V with a win over Windham.  Before we jump into the teams, lets take a peek at the refreshed landscape in what should be a competitive division.

First and foremost, both St. Thomas and Windham are gone to Division-IV where they will continue to compete as Championship caliber teams.  Campbell High and Bishop Brady will conversely be competing in Division-VI, making way for four new teams.  Pelham slides down two divisions from Division-III, Monadnock one division from D-IV and Interlakes-Moultonborough and Epping-Newmarket move up from Division-VI.

The realignment has eased the burden on most of these Division-V teams. “It’s much easier for our travel schedule, last year we rode 1,000 miles to and from scrimmages and games” Monadnock Head Coach Linwood Patnode said in reference to the new schedule.

When you lose your head coach in addition to your best player over the off-season it puts a bit more strain on the quest to defend your Division IV title.

When you throw the top two Division V teams from the previous season into the mix, each returning key playmakers from a year ago, well that just feels like you're piling on..

Few divisions if any are going to match the depth of quality teams from 1 to 10 than Division IV and the coaching staff at defending champion Trinity knows that. It's a division full of playmakers and when you check the weekly list of the top rushing leaders in the state of New Hampshire you can all but count on finding most of the names on that list here. Let's just say you're not going to need a program to figure out who is carrying the football on most nights..

The champs open with a target on their back, two of their rivals from a year ago have a chip on their shoulders while the two teams that met for the Division V title a year ago are here now to crash the party.

Today we take a look at Division IV football as a division once ruled by Plymouth looks to re-claim a title that now resides down south in the Queen City.

They know their football at Bishop Guertin; they know what it takes to win, they know what works and they aren't going to be afraid to question you if they think your way isn't going to cut it.

And that sums up Travis Cote's first month as BG's head coach last August.

Whether it was the Wing-T, defensive alignments or water breaks every step of the new tenure was scrutinized and Cote handled it all like a guy who knew what he was doing all along. Turns out he was right.

Longtime Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski has talked about what he calls ‘Excellence equity', meaning wining buys you the benefit of the doubt and a little more rope to play with. Nine months ago Travis Cote earned some of that equity with BG's fourth straight Division II title and you can imagine he is having a much more peaceful August because of it.

Call him an innovator or a coach minding the store...either way he is a championship coach and eight other Division II teams have to figure out how to knock him & his team off.

 Today we take a look at Division II Football and identify who those teams are;

Pelham slides down two divisions from Division-III, Monadnock one division from D-IV and Interlakes-Moultonborough and Epping-Newmarket move up from Division-VI.

The realignment has eased the burden on most of these Division-V teams. "It's much easier for our travel schedule, last year we rode 1,000 miles to and from scrimmages and games" Monadnock Head Coach Linwood Patnode said in reference to the new schedule.

The consensus amongst the coaches is that Kearsarge and Somersworth are the top two teams in this Division.

Hugo Bolin Field in scenic Rochester NH (I'm a native son) was the site for the Spaulding Football Jamboree. Some bad information made me think things got underway at 6, so I missed the first period which saw Kingswood Regional (D4, Wolfeboro NH) beat Farmington/Nute (D6) 8-0.

I arrived to see Spaulding, led by returning Senior QB Sam Oullette, march down the field and score on a Tyler Snow TD run. Spaulding's D swarmed to the ball and never allowed the Kingswood offense to get anything going. Trey Scott had a beautiful 48 yard TD run called back for a sideline infraction, but a few plays later scored from 35 yards out. Spaulding beat Kingswood 14-0 in the 15 minute running clock period. Spaulding ran a lot of the double wing, misdirection plays we saw last season, but did experiment with some shotgun sets.

Period 3 saw Somerswoth (D5) take on Farmington/Nute. Bad news for D5 Linebackers- Josh Ream is back. The Mini-Mike Allstot of the Hilltop City looked like he was in midseason form. After scoring on a Kurtis Michaud scored on a 3 yard TD run (set up by a beautiful 30 yard completion from Seinor QB Drew Francouer to Darren Glore on a designed rollout ) , Ream rumbled for an 8 yard TD.

10 things I picked up watching 10 teams unofficially
kickoff their seasons at the 2012 Queen City Jamboree.

1.  Pinkerton is going to be really good this year! Shocker, huh?

2.  Souhegan is not likely to miss the Division 3 playoffs again.

3.  Trinity and Memorial sure like to play "defensive" type games in the jamboree.

4.  Central will score plenty, but can their defense hold up their end of the bargain?

5.  QB Connor Benjamin of Goffstown could start for pretty much any team in the state.

6.  It looks like another tough year for the West High Blue Knights.

7.  Timberlane likes their quarterbacks bigger than your average sized signal caller.

8.  This BG team seems to be much more comfortable under Travis Cote in year 2.

9.  It sure was weird watching Salem play without Jack Gati on the sideline!

10. NH fans sure are ready for some football!

 Division I

Player of the year: Jerrickson Fedrick of Salem

 http://www.nhsportspage.com/players_lounge_player.php?player_id=2388

Fedrick promised a big senior season at the end of the summer and backed it up. Abner Rodriguez (786 yards rushing) proved to be a very strong 2nd option for the Blue Devils offense but there wasn't a defense that faced Salem all season long that didn't key on Fedrick at all times. He still managed to shake loose for huge yardage and was just as lethal on special teams.

Runner-ups: Tyler Grant & Jake Pleadwell of Exeter, Kevin Davies & Emmitt Smith of Pinkerton and Armond McRae of Nashua South

What we thought going into the season:

That this could very well be a one team race; the defending champs returned a ton of leadership and talent and 2011 was the year they were supposed to win it all, not 2010. We thought Exeter would be improved and that they would fight it out for a top four seed and that Nashua South would be the second best team in the division.

We start our post-season awards today and would like to introduce Woodlands Credit Union as the latest New Hampshire business to support our coverage of high school athletics on New Hampshire Sportspage.

Woodlands Credit Union has five locations across the state and will be sponsoring the coverage of Berlin high school, Plymouth Regional high school, Kennett high school and Lebanon high school.

We count on the support of New Hampshire businesses to keep our free website going and want to thank Woodlands Credit Union for their support. We are very excited to have them on board.

Today we take a look at Division IV, V and VI as we recognize the best teams, players and coaches from the 2011 football season.

Division IV

Player of the year: Josh Hughes of Trinity

http://www.nhsportspage.com/players_lounge_player.php?player_id=3061

Hughes was a leader for Trinity in both rushing and in tackles while also handling kicking duties. The Pioneers may have been a bit further ahead of the field than we thought and Hughes was their go to guy all season long. Few divisions if any in the state had as many elite running backs as this one did.

Runner-ups: David Mahoney of Laconia, Jesse Leiby of Monadnock, Nick Massa of Kennett and Taylor Newberry of Plymouth Regional.

 Division I

 (2) Exeter at (1) Pinkerton Academy

Two very distinguished head coaches face each other on Saturday having taken two very different roads to get to the top. The champs are once again the team to beat in division I while Exeter looks to win a title in only their second season at the top level.

Pinkerton Academy joins Bishop Guertin as the powerhouse football team in the state. If you are sending one team to play the best from Maine or Vermont every year for ultimate bragging rights among our New England neighbors then 9 out of 10 years you're sending one of those two schools, and really that should come as no surprisae. It is simply set-up that way.

Consider that Pinkerton has well over 3,000 students; more than twice the students Exeter has and by far the most students in the state. You see even though they share the same division Pinkerton playing Exeter is no different than Souhegan playing Inter-Lakes. More kids/more depth/more talent. Pretty simple. In a game where you go into a season expecting half your starters to miss games with injuries that is invaluable and the Astros success rate shows you it has worked to their advantage year after year.

While sitting with friends at a restaurant in Dover after watching last Saturday's St. Thomas/Windham championship game a steady stream of people began making their way into the lounge from the just concluded Dover/Spaulding semifinal.

People were in incredibly high spirits and part of that was the Dover win (the Spaulding crowd had headed back to Rochester) but a big part was what they had just witnessed. More a few people could be heard calling the 24-21 Dover win the best high school football game they had ever seen. People kept talking about ‘that little short kid' who knocked home a 29 yard field goal in front of over 1,000 people to win the game as the clock expired. Just as many people talked about Spaulding and how hard they had fought, how well they had played.

You go to these games and you take in the scene; the band, the cheerleaders, the parents with their signs, the kids leaving everything on the field, the coaches leading them. It's also nice to hear how a game like that affects people after it is over and it became very clear that this was a game that people will talk about for years to come.

 Division III

 Portsmouth (4) at Bedford (2)

The coverage of Portsmouth is sponsored by Craven, Sullivan & Splendore PLLC.

Box score of the first match-up: http://www.nhsportspage.com/football/game_stats.php?Ateam_id=500&Hteam_id=502&game_id=11293&year=2011-2012

A very strong division at the top proved to be as good as we thought it was during last weekend's semifinal round.

Bedford and Hollis-Brookline played a second classic football game in a month in a contest that was decided by a two point conversion. Bedford made just enough plays, including two big ones from QB James Caparell, to advance with a 21-20 win. At the same time Portsmouth proved they were a 4 seed in name only, dominating Goffstown for the second time this season as Billy Lane ran wild for four touchdowns and the Clippers defense picked off Grizzlies quarterback Connor Benjamin three times.

We were in the minority when we picked Bedford to win the Division III crown in the pre-season and in fact this is a team that had to overcome a 0-2 start. Bedford beat Portsmouth late in the season by scoring on special teams, picking off Billy Hartmann three times and scoring on a half-back pass. The Bulldogs feel like they have the defensive backs, led by Mike Gardiner, to match up on the outside with Portsmouth. Their task on Saturday is to shadow Billy Lane everywhere he goes and make sure a linebacker is on him every time he sneaks out of the backfield for a swing pass or screen.

I'm pretty sure this is not what Goffstown had in mind when they fought so hard the last month of the season to earn the top seed in the Division III playoffs.

You see, losing to an opponent during the regular season and then turning around to host a playoff game against that same school is not an uncommon occurrence. This though was not a 21-14 loss in the rain or a 28-27 game where a bobbled extra point snap was the difference.

 This was 49-7.

This was seniors taking curtain calls. This was subs and JV kids getting to play under the bright lights for a change. This was domination.

So how did we get here? And why is Portsmouth jumping on a bus to Goffstown and not the other way around?

 (4) Salem at (1) Pinkerton Academy

http://www.nhsportspage.com/football/game_stats.php?Ateam_id=481&Hteam_id=483&game_id=11240&year=2011-2012

When Pinkerton Academy beat a highly respected Nashua South team 56-14 in week 2 we all said ‘Wow these guys are definitely the team to beat.'

When they rolled on and then beat Salem 49-14 two weeks later it was more of ‘There might not even be a competitive Division I race this year...'

I'm not so sure that still isn't the case.

Can anyone beat a Pinkerton Academy team that not only finished 8-0 in the division, not only beat the #1 seed from Division II but beat the three other Division I playoff teams by a combined score of 147-44?

147-44 leaves little to interpretation, 147-44 is miles ahead of the field and as we start the Division I playoffs this weekend that is the task in front of three pretty good football teams.

Another factor to consider is that Salem right now isn't exactly playing like a top four team. The Blue Devils were beaten badly on back to back weekends by Exeter 32-6 (and it wasn't that close..) and Nashua South (49-20) before bouncing back with two wins over the bottom two teams in the division. Manchester Central played Pinkerton tough two weekends ago and beat Nashua South last weekend and you'll find a lot of company in the group that believes if those two teams played again today (they met all the way back in week 2) it would be Manchester Central that would come out on top.

Add a fake punt to the memorable plays that ended Laconia's season when they traveled in the postseason up to arch-rival Plymouth. All the momentum was with the Sachems when Taylor Newberry took a fake punt 68 yards to the house to give the Bobcats a 21-14 lead they never gave back. Newberry carried the ball 37 times, gained 205 yards on the ground and likely slept very well Saturday night. Now Plymouth gets another shot at a Trinity team they feel like they never should have lost to in the first place.

Plymouth dominated the line play on both sides of the ball in the first meeting (in Plymouth) and carried a 7-0 lead late into the second half.

Realizing they couldn't find any running room for the duo of Josh Hughes and Adam Chambers the Pioneers went to the air behind the left arm of sophomore Carmen Giampetruzzi. The southpaw connected with Hughes and tight end Andrew Lauderdale for two long scoring plays as Trinity escaped with a 12-7 that left them relieved and Plymouth stunned.

Cody Bellows of Keene capped off his career in style with a 13 carry 64 yard performance in the Blackbirds 17-6 upset of Bishop Guertin Friday night.

Quarterback Lucas Luopa of Keene threw for 100 yards and a touchdown (on 8 for 15 passing), ran for 49 and even had one reception for 12 yards in the season ending win over the top team in Division II.

Ryan Monette of St. Thomas saved one of his best performances of the season for the biggest stage as he ran for four touchdowns in a 50-15 win over Somersworth in the Division V semifinals. Monette carried the ball 27 times for 224 yards as the Saints move on to the championship game Saturday afternoon.

Riley Cote and Manchester Central also finished out the season on a strong note as the Little Green signal caller completed 15 of 19 passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns in a 40-35 win over Nashua South.

Wide receiver Jared Chandler of Central finished the season as the top pass catcher in the division with 5 receptions for 85 yards and a score in the win.

Trinity two way star Josh Hughes led his team back to the Division IV title game with a resounding victory over Monadnock on Saturday.

James Caparell and Bedford suffered a season ending defeat to Souhegan but will still move on to this weekend's Division III playoffs. The junior QB completed 17 of 36 throws for 183 yards and a score in the loss.

Bedford wide receiver Brian Collins had a touchdown catch in the loss, ending with 2 receptions for 21 yards.

Portsmouth WR/DB Jack Mackey and his Clipper teammates enter the playoffs on a high note after a 49-0 win over Pembroke Academy Friday night.

Armond McRae and Nashua South suffered their second straight defeat at the hands of Manchester Central 40-35 Friday night but will still move on to face Exeter in the Division I semifinals this weekend. McRae had 90 total yards and three touchdowns in the season ending loss.

Salem's Jerrickson Fedrick wrapped up the Division I rushing title with a 22 carry 211 yard performance against Londonderry. Fedrick had three touchdowns in the win and finished the regular season with 19 rushing touchdowns

 Division IV

 Monadnock (4) at Trinity (1)

The coverage of Trinity high school is sponsored by Edible Arrangements

The top seed faces a very dangerous Monadnock team that they defeated 16-7 back on October 1st. Monadnock has been led by the state's leading rusher Jessie Leiby (1,367 yards) and fellow back Jake Dubois (255). The Huskies played both Trinity and Plymouth tough in early season losses and in fact their 45-28 loss to Laconia was their first defeat by double digits all season.

In Trinity they face a team with arguably more depth than any team in the division, led by the likely player of the year Josh Hughes. Hughes has been one of the leading tacklers for the Pioneers on defense, kicks extra points, has returned kicks and when he wasn't too busy with other things rushed for 626 yards and 12 touchdowns. Ryan Carrier has been effective all season running the football (379 yds.) and Romeo Masku has been one of the leaders of a talented defensive backfield. The coaching staff has watched sophomore Carmen Giampetruzzi grow into the quarterback position and Trinity has been able to go on the road and win games at Plymouth and Monadnock.

(4) Somersworth at (1) St. Thomas Aquinas to be played at Exeter H.S

Box score of the first game between the two teams:

http://www.nhsportspage.com/football/game_stats.php?Ateam_id=518&Hteam_id=525&game_id=11410&year=2011-2012

Somersworth needed about 5 different scenarios to break their way going into the last weekend of the regular season to get here and someway, somehow it all fell into place.

 To summarize:

Bow, which held the tie-breaker over Somersworth after a head to head win on opening weekend, needed to lose to a 1-7 Sanborn team that lost 52-0 to St. Thomas four weeks ago and came into the game giving up an average of 32 points per contest.

Did I mention it also was a home game for Bow high school?

Somersworth needed to take care of their own business by beating a 2-6 Fall Mountain team.

Wait there's more; IF all that happened, if Bow lost at home to a 1-7 team and Somersworth won their game over Fall Mountain then Somersworth then had to play Stevens' sometime between Sunday and Thursday to finish off a game played on September 30th. A game Somersworth was leading by less than a touchdown when it was called due to lightning either needed to be finished or you'd need Stevens' to concede the contest so the semifinals could be played on time.

The top six games of the weekend feature one game from all six divisions.  Once again you can look for playoff previews of every playoff game played in all six divisions around the state in the coming weeks.

 On to the games;

 Division I

Exeter (7-1) at Nashua South (7-1)

The coverage of Exeter H.S is sponsored by Chad Fletcher at Blue Water Mortgage

No mathematical equations, complicated tie-breakers or even a coin toss needed to decide the #2 seed in the division I playoffs, it comes down to the winner of this one on Friday night.

The statistics will tell you what your eyes already have; these are two teams that can score (both average over 30 points per contest) and feature much improved defenses from where they were a year ago. You don't get to 7-1 without earning it.

Exeter is second in the division behind only Pinkerton in scoring defense (12.1 ppg) while Nashua South has only given up an average of 9 points in their last five games. The Panthers have been led by lounge member Derek Paradis and have played very tough defense since a 44-41 over Lowell back in mid-September.

Trinity running back Josh Hughes was the best player on the filed in the Pioneers 50-0 win over Kingswood. Hughes carried the ball 4 times for 81 yards, added a 50 yard reception and was the team's leading tackler as Trinity clinched the top seed in the Division IV playoffs.

Ryan Monette of St. Thomas had another big day, setting up a season finale Saturday against Kearsarge Regional that will decide the top seed & home field advantage in the Division V playoffs.  Monette rushed for 120 yards and two touchdowns while adding 20 yards and another touchdown catching the ball in the Saints 31-6 win over Fall Mountain Regional.

Shawn Cavalarro and Hanover won an entertaining shoot-out over John Stark 50-38 as Cavalarro threw for 99 yards and a touchdown in the win.

Teammate Cyrus Rothwell-Ferraris continued to be one of the leading recievers in the division as he added 50 yards receiving to go along with 60 yards rushing and a touchdown in Hanover's third win of the season.

Kennett RB Nick Massa was the primary focus of a very good Laconia defense as the Eagles were bumped out of playoff contention with a 42-12 loss to the Sachems.

Cody Bellows and Keene H.S saw their playoff hopes dashed in a hard fought 24-21 loss to Timberlane Friday night.

Keene QB Lucas Luopa completed 13 of 24 passes for 190 yards and two scores in defeat.

Armond McRae of Nashua South continued South's run to a top 2 seed with a 134 yards rushing and three touchdowns (one receiving) in a 49-20 win over Salem.

Derek Paradis of Nashua South had 27 yards on the ground, 46 receiving and a key touchdown as South moved to 7-1 on the season.

In the same game Salem running back Jerrickson Fedrick was immense in a losing cause; rushing for 248 yards and two touchdowns against Nashua South.

Manchester Central WR Jared Chandler continued to his all-state play at wide receiver with 5 catches for 52 yards but Central dropped a tough 24-14 decision to Exeter Friday night.

Manchester Central QB Riley Cote completed 12 of 21 passes for 145 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.

Shannon Tucker and Newfound saw their playoffs hopes dashed in a 28-0 loss to Franklin. Tucker was held to 57 yards rushing as the Golden Tornadoes became only the second team to hold Newfound scoreless this season.

Jack Mackey of Portsmouth played very well but the Clippers dropped their first division game of the season 14-7 to Hollis-Brookline.  Mackey had 33 yards receiving and was one of the teams leaders on defense in the close loss.

 Division I

Nashua South (6-1) at Salem (5-2)

After bouncing back from a disappointing performance against Pinkerton with a 44-41 win over Lowell on September 17th Nashua South has feasted on the bottom four teams in division I to the tune of a combined score of 117-25.

Those scores tell us that this is a top heavy division (we knew that) and also that the 2011 version of Nashua South football can play a little defense (not sure if you were aware...).  Julier Rivera & Lounge member Derek Paradis have led an improved defense and the Panthers have settled on a #1 running back in Armond McRae.

They'll face a Salem team that is coming off a 32-6 loss to Exeter that was surprising in its totality. They could not get anything going offensively and could not handle Exeter's running game. The Blue Devils own a win over Manchester Central and if they can get a key win at home here they still stand to be in very good shape to return to the playoffs after losing three of their top offensive players from a year ago.

Shannon Tucker of Newfound kept his team in the playoff hunt as the Bears defeated Mascoma 34-6. Tucker ran for 177 yards and two scores in the win and also added a 27 yard touchdown reception.

Nashua South continued to play great football late in the season with a 36-6 win over Londonderry. Derek Paradis had 36 yards rushing and 43 receiving as the Panthers moved to 6-1.

Armond McRae of Nashua South is making a late run at the rushing title in Division I as he gained 145 yards on 16 carries in the win. McRae scored twice on the ground and added 94 yards receiving and another score as he now ranks in the top 5 in Division I in rushing and receiving.

Jack Mackey and Kyle DiCesare of Portsmouth turned a much anticipated match-up with undefeated Goffstown into a rout as the Clippers won easily 49-7. Mackey had three receptions for 15 yards and DiCesare had one catch for 8 yards in the win.

Trinity running back Josh Hughes had 89 total yards in his team's 45-14 win over Kennett as the Pioneers took one step closer to the top seed in the Division IV playoffs.

Kennett running back Nick Massa led his team in rushing in defeat

Salem running back Jerrickson Fedrick was held to 87 yards rushing and a touchdown in a 32-6 loss to Exeter Friday night.

Lucas Luopa & Cody Bellows of Keene saw their playoff hopes take a big blow with a 21-7 loss to Dover Friday night. Luopa completed 12 of 21 passes for 178 yards and rushed for 36 yards in defeat.

Riley Cote of Manchester Central was on the wrong end of the upset of the weekend as Central lost to cross-town rival Manchester Memorial 28-24. Cote sat out the first half and then completed 5 of 8 passes for 89 in the loss.

Teammate Jared Chandler of Manchester Central had three receptions for 40 yards and remains the leading receiver in the division after seven weeks.

Shawn Cavalarro and Hanover battled Monadnock before dropping a 31-19 decision. Cavalarro threw for 142 yards in the loss.

Teammate Cyrus Rothwell-Ferraris opened the game with an electrifying 80 yard kickoff return for touchdown and went on to catch 2 passes for 30 yards in defeat.

Ryan Monette and St. Thomas took another step towards the top seed in Division V with 42-7 win over Bow. Monette scored twice on the ground and added 83 yards receiving and another touchdown in the win.

This week's slate of games is without question the best weekend match-ups of the season thus far. All nine games we are previewing today could fall under the category of ‘must see' and they span across all six divisions. If you are going to get out to a game this weekend; here are eight very good ones to consider.

Also be sure to check Roger Brown's ‘The state of football' at http://www.nhfootballreport.com/

 On to the games;

Division I

Brockton (2-3) at Pinkerton Academy (6-0)

With only a test against Manchester Central standing in the way of a an undefeated division record Pinkerton Academy gets an opportunity to enter the discussion of the best teams in all of New England; an accolade that Bishop Guertin enjoyed two years ago.

The Boxers fell to 1-3 after a 22-15 loss to Xaverian but bounced back a week ago with a 37-27 win over Fitchburg. Starting quarterback Paul Mroz (questionable for this week's game with an ankle injury) left the game early but was replaced by junior Austin Roberts who gained 109 yards on 9 carries and led Brockton to the win. Running back Josh Brewster added 136 yards and a touchdown as Peter Colombo's team will now try to get back to .500 this weekend.

We are very excited to introduce Kennett all-state running back Nick Massa as our newest member of the players' lounge. Nick is an honor roll student and a three sport star for Kennett in football, Baseball and hockey.

Nick's parents reached out to us late last week and wanted to support the work we do here at New Hampshire Sportspage. We greatly appreciate the support of parents like Nick's as we couldn't run this site without them.

Salem running back Jerrickson Fedrick was a one man wrecking crew in the Blue Devils 59-20 win over non-division rival Timberlane. Fedrick took over the Division I rushing lead with a 374 yard (on 20 carries) 5 touchdown effort as Salem improved to 5-1.

Lucas Luopa and Keene came up with a big effort in a much needed 36-13 win over Merrimack. Luopa completed 13 of 22 throws and had a career high 5 touchdowns passes in the win.

Cody Bellows played a big part in the Blackbirds win with 41 yards on 6 carries as Keene improved to 2-3 on the season.

Riley Cote of Manchester Central made the big throws when his needed him to as the Little Green held off Londonderry 14-10. Cote completed 9 of 16 throws for 105 yards in the victory.

Jared Chandler of Manchester Central had 2 receptions for 41 yards in the win that gets Central to 5-1 on the season.

Shannon Tucker of Newfound led his team to a key 27-0 victory that keeps them in the playoff conversation. Tucker ran for 85 yards and a touchdown and added one catch in the win.

Armond McRae of Nashua South averaged over 19 yards per carry as his school overwhelmed crosstown rival Nashua North 47-0 Thursday night. McRae gained 116 yards and scored twice on the ground and added a 58 yard touchdown reception as South moved to 5-1 on the season.

Teammate Derek Paradis had another solid effort in the win as he gained 45 yards on just 4 carries starters sat out most of the second half.

Shawn Cavalarro and Hanover enjoyed their second lopsided win of the season in a 42-0 win over Kingswood. The sophomore QB completed 6 of 8 passes for 91 yards and three touchdowns in the win.

Teammate Cyrus Rothwell-Ferraris added a 10 yard reception in limited time.

Ryan Monette of St. Thomas continued his run at Division V player of the year with a big effort against Stevens in his school's first ever night football game. Monette ran for 120 yards and had a 31 yard reception as the Saints moved to 6-0 with the 44-6 victory.

James Caparell and Bedford scored a surprisingly easy 49-6 win over Milford and continued to play very good football in October. Caparell sat out the second half but did complete 3 of 5 passes for 79 yards and a score in limited action. Caparell also had 23 yards and touchdown running the football in the win.

Bedford Wide receiver Brian Collins led his team in receiving with 60 yards and a touchdown on two receptions as the Bulldogs improved to 4-2 on the season.

Trinity running back Josh Hughes also saw his touches limited by a lopsided score as he gained 40 yards and had a touchdown run on just 4 carries in a 38-14 win over John Stark.

Another week into the season and another new member of our players lounge to introduce. Manchester Central quarterback Riley Cote is our newest member and we'd like to thank Riley's parents for supporting our free website. Riley joins teammate Jared Chandler as well as former Central all-state basketball players John Wickey and Will Bayliss as members.

Quick note before we get to the games of the week; scores and stats will be a little delayed as I'll be gone all weekend on vacation. We will have coverage of the Thursday night games on Friday but the other games will be delayed.

So look for complete coverage for all the games of the weekend late Monday afternoon. We'll post our performance summary Monday night and statewide passing, rushing and receiving leaders on Tuesday

We'll be right on schedule for the rest of the year from there.

 On to the games;

 Division I

Pinkerton Academy (5-0) at Exeter (5-0)

The coverage of Exeter H.S is sponsored by Chad Fletcher at Bluewater Mortgage

The only big time match-up in Division I this weekend as first place will be on the line.

On a week to week basis it is hard to argue if it has been Pinkerton's offense or their defense that has been the more dominant unit. They will face the #2 ground attack in the division when they face Bill Ball's football team as Exeter boasts three runners who have gone for over 240 yards on the season; Tyler Grant (485), Conor Carrier (270) and Colby Swane (241), who is injured and won't be able to go against the Astros. Pinkerton will counter with a defense led by Ryan Coombs and Jesse Trottier that is giving up only 196 yards a game. As the saying goes: Somethings gotta give.

It was a huge day for Ryan Monette of St. Thomas  in the Saints 52-0 win over Sanborn. Monette moved to the top of the division rushing leaders with 264 yards and three touchdowns on the day as his team remains undefeated on the season.

Derek Paradis of Nashua South averaged over 13 yards a carry and found the end zone while rushing for  92 yards in his teams' 34-13 win over Concord. Paradis also caught 4 passes from Trevor Knight for 45 yards in the win.

Armond McRae of Nashua South had another big day running the football in a 34-13 win over Concord. McRae carried the ball 25 times for 132 rushing and a score while adding 6 catches for 31 yards.

James Caparell of Bedford had a huge night in a 43-13 win over Con-Val. The junior quarterback completed 14 of 17 passes for 231 yards and three touchdown passes. Caparell also gained 10 yards rushing in the victory.

Bedford Wide receiver Brian Collins had a big effort as he returned to the lineup with 4 catches for 48 yards and a touchdown in the win.

Jared Chandler of Manchester Central moved his way up the statewide receiving leaders list with 118 yards and a touchdown in a 42-0 win over Souhegan. Chandler, the Little Green's former starting QB, also threw a 40 yard touchdown strike in the win.

Lucas Luopa and Cody Bellows of Keene were both standouts Friday night but the Blackbirds suffered their second consecutive upset loss when they fell to previously winless Spaulding 25-17

Shannon Tucker of Newfound continued to be one of the best playmakers in Division VI as he rushed for 175 yards and 2 touchdowns  on 11 carries in a 41-0 win over Raymond.

Kyle DiCesare of Portsmouth had one of his best efforts of the season in a 35-14 win over Milford. DiCesare caught 3 passes for 27 yards and a score in the Clippers victory.

His teammate Jack Mackey had another strong game for the Clippers; hauling in 4 passes for 32 yards on offense and continuing to be a top playmaker on defense for Bill Murphy's team.

Salem all-state running back Jerrickson Fedrick suffered an apparent hip injury in his team's 34-14 win over Nashua North. Fedrick gained 18 yards on 5 carries before leaving the game.

Shawn Cavalarro and Cyrus Rothwell-Ferraris of Hanover both were key playmakers Friday night but Hanover fell to division rival Plymouth Regional 37-7.

Trinity running back Josh Hughes helped lead his team to a win over Monadnock as the Pioneers remained undefeated..

Before we get to the games of the week we want to welcome another new member to the New Hampshire Sportspage Players' Lounge. Bishop Guertin running back Zach Mailloux became our newest member this week when his parents reached out to support our free website by signing their son up. We appreciate all the parents who help make what we do possible.

Zach and other lounge members now have the ability to have Youtube highlights posted on their profiles.

 Division I

Londonderry (0-4) at Pinkerton Academy (4-0)

The suspension of all-state running back Sean O'Gorman for the first four games of the season put the Lancers behind the eight ball. Is there still time to recover?

The 12-6 loss to Concord last week probably hurts more than any of the other three because that is a team that is similarly on the outside looking in right now. O'Gorman carries this offense on his back when he is in the lineup but resurgence in the second half seems unlikely because the defense has been every bit the problem a bogged down offense has been. Londonderry gave up 36 points to Nashua North and 46 to Exeter on back to back weekends. That's asking an awful lot of your offense.

This weekend they play their arch-rival in game that looks to be one of the more lopsided additions in recent memory.

If the Astros stay healthy there is no reason they can't go down as one of the top New Hampshire football teams of the last 10 years. They are outscoring their opponents by an average margin of 42-7 and those opponents are a combined 10-2 when they are playing someone other than Brian O'Reilly's team. If Londonderry is looking for a jump start to the second half of the season this is a pretty tough spot to try and find it.

 Players' Lounge Performance Summary:

Jared Chandler of Manchester Central had his break-out game of the season in a 34-6 win over Nashua North.  Chandler had six receptions for 110 yards and two touchdowns to go along with 30 yards rushing on 3 carries in the win as the Little Green moved into a tie for 2nd place in Division I behind Pinkerton Academy & Exeter.

Trinity running back Josh Hughes was stymied for most of the night by a very good Plymouth run defense, gaining a season low 8 yards on 8 carries. The senior captain though came up big with when it mattered most, hauling in a Carmen Giampetruzzi touchdown pass in the 4th quarter as the Pioneers scored two late touchdowns for a huge 12-7 road win.

Lucas Luopa of Keene hit Alex Parentau for a touchdown to give the Blackbirds a 17-7 lead at halftime but Keene could not hold on as they were upset by Manchester West 28-17.

Cody Bellows of Keene was again one of the top playmakers in the game as Keene will try to bounce back when they travel to Rochester to play an improving Spaulding team next week.

James Caparell of Bedford had a huge night in a 42-14 win over Pembroke. The junior quarterback completed 9 of 13 passes for 207 and two scores while adding 74 yards and another score on the ground.

Brian Collins of Bedford sat out the game with an injury but should be ready to go again next week when Bedford looks for its third straight win when it takes on Con-Val.

Ryan Monette of St. Thomas gained 37 yards on 25 carries as Somersworth focused their defense on slowing him down. It wasn't enough though as the Saints pulled out a big 16-13 win over their cross-town rival.

Shannon Tucker of Newfound was again the focus of the Bears offense; gaining 108 yards rushing and finding the end zone twice as Newfound dropped a 30-20 decision to defending champion Newport.

Armond McRae had a big game in Nashua South's surprisingly easy 31-6 win over Manchester Memorial. McRae ran the ball 19 times for 201 yards, including a 70 yard touchdown run in the win.

Teammate Derek Paradis was held in check running the ball but scored two big touchdowns in the win. Paradis returned a kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown and then added a 104 yard interception for a score that helped seal the victory.

Shawn Cavallaro of Hanover was held in check passing the football but carried the ball 14 times for 61 yards in a tough 10-7 loss to Kennett.

Teammate Cyrus Rothwell-Ferraris of Hanover was again one of the top offensive threats for the Marauders; gaining 80 yards on 12 carries but Hanover could not hold on to a 7-0 lead and lost a heartbreaker to a good Kennett team.

Jack Mackey of Portsmouth had one catch for 9 yards in the Clippers 41-7 win over Con-Val Friday night.

Jerrickson Fedrick of Salem was the focus of the best defense in New Hampshire Saturday but still was able to produce 63 yards and a touchdown in a 49-14 loss to Pinkerton Academy.

Another new member of the Players' lounge to announce this week as parents continue to reach out and support the work we do. Cody Bellows of the Keene H.S football team joins his teammate Lucas Luopa as a member. Bellows is averaging over 5 yards per carry for the Blackbirds and has a receiving touchdown as well after only two games. Cody and all the new members are adding video and their interviews to their profile for our readers & college recruiters to view.

Also, check out Roger Brown's 'The state of football' and weekly picks of all the games around the state every Friday at the New Hampshire Football Report (www.nhfootballreport.com )

 On to the games;

 Division I

 Pinkerton (3-0) at Salem (3-0)

Let's cut right to the chase; Are the other eight teams in Division I playing for second place?

They just might be. It's not surprising to see the defending champs sitting at 3-0 but beating Bishop Guertin (still a top 5 team in the state), Nashua South (many peoples pick for 2nd in the division) and Nashua North (only seven points separated them & the Astros a year ago) by a combined score of 119-14! No, it was hard to see that coming. Those team don't get beat downs very often and the issue right now is that there aren't a lot of defenses that stand out in Division I. We knew Pinkerton would score coming into the season but now we know they can shut you down as well. This team is better than we thought and there are reasons to believe they are only going to get better.

Before we get to our games of the week we'd like to announce wide receivers Brian Collins of Bedford and Cyrus Rothwell-Ferraris as the newest members of our Players Lounge. Their parents reached out to us and signed their sons up this week. Doing that supports this website and we thank them. Both players will be completing their interview questions this week.

 On to the games;

 Division I

Pinkerton Academy (2-0) at Nashua North (2-0)

Titans head coach Jason Robie may want to hold off on showing his kids the game tape of Pinkerton/South from last weekend as it might sink them into a deep depression. The reason for that depression being that no team in the state is beating the Astros when they play that well, just too many weapons and experience to go along with it. Nashua North has had to replace two of the best playmakers in the state in Brandon Karkhanis and Andre Williams but has been able to get out to a 2-0 start. Taylor Miranda has thrown for 194 yards and two scores in his first year as starter and North has gotten nice production from the fourth leading rusher in Division I Marc Lavine.

 Division I

Salem (1-0) at Manchester Central (1-0)

The coverage of Manchester Central is sponsored by 900 Degrees Pizzaria of Manchester

Both teams survived their clashes with non-Division I foes in their openers (and survive is the right word to use) and now open division play searching for their identities.  Jerrickson Federick carried the ball 25 times against Keene and earned every one of his 109 yards on the ground. When you have a talent like Fedrick you make sure he gets over 20 touches a game. What head coach Jack Gati does not want is his kids to come to rely too heavily on their all-state back bailing them out of third and long situations on a weekly basis.  Quarterback Jonathan Soldano did not throw often (7 total attempts) but came up big when he did with two touchdown throws in the 20-13 win over Keene. They'll face a Central defense that showed some holes in a shootout win over Division III Portsmouth and if they can use Fedrick as a decoy to open up space for backfield mate Abner Rodriguez (86 yards on 20 carries) they have a shot to have a balanced and formidable offense.

As we will be doing every weekend throughout the football season we take a look at the performances of our Players Lounge members with week one now in the books.

Statistics are up to date and the early Division leaders are available in all six classes.

Our first Thursday Thoughts column of the year will be on the home page this week as well.

 Performance Summary:

Logan Batchelder of Stevens  completed 8 of 18 passes for 105 yards and two scores in a 31-28 los to defending champion Kearsarge Regional. Batchelder though had to leave the game early as the junior third year starter suffered a broken leg and may be lost for the season. We want to send along our best to Logan and we will try and keep you up to date throughout the season on his progress as he works his way back.

Josh Hughes of Trinity carried the ball 8 times for 105 yards and a score in a decisive 41-14 win over Merrimack Valley. Hughes and most of the Pioneers starters were out of the game for good chunks of the second half after Trinity built a 41-0 lead.

Lucas Luopa of Keene produced nearly 200 combined yards Friday night but the Blackbirds dropped a tight 20-13 to Division I Salem. Luopa was 6 for 14 passing with 150 yards and two touchdown passes while gaining 49 yards on 8 carries.

Jerrickson Federick of Salem scored twice in the win over Keene. Federick carried the ball 25 times for 109 yards and a score against a tough Blackbirds defense and also had a 17 yard touchdown reception.

James Caparell of Bedford threw for 260 yards and a pair of scores but it wasn't enough as Bedford dropped their opener against a very good Timberlane squad 42-27.

Armond McRae of Nashua South was held in check offensively but did return an interception for a touchdown in an impressive 37-20 win over Dover.

Derek Paradis led Nashua South in rushing as he gained 82 yards on 8 carries that included a score.

Jared Chandler of Manchester Central had one reception for 18 yards in Central's thrilling 30-28 win over Portsmouth Friday night.

Jack Mackey of Portsmouth had a very good opener on the other side as he led the Clippers in receiving with 93 yards on 7 catches.

Kyle DiCesare of Portsmouth played well on both sides of the ball as the Clippers lost a heartbreaker to one of the top teams in Division I.

At Bishop Guertin it has always been more about the program under Tony Johnson and less about the individuals on the field, and they've had some very good ones. A season ending injury to a player the caliber of Mike Kelly would have crushed some teams but BG kept moving right along last season. All the way to their sixth Division II title in seven years.

In 2011 the program that prides itself on their ‘the next guy in line steps right in' mentality faces its biggest test.  Johnson remains as athletic director but stepped down as head coach and in his place comes former Manchester West head coach Travis Cote.

The new head coach at Bishop Guertin has never had this kind of talent to work with. Or this kind of pressure. While the BG players acclimate themselves to some things new (the wing T offense) and some things familiar (the defensive strategy remains largely the same) the only certainty is that eight other Division II teams could care less about BG's getting to know you growing pains. It's still BG, they still wear those green uniforms and they're still the champs. If someone is winning the title it is going to have to go through BG.

In tennis the toughest guy to beat isn't the guy who can whip you from the baseline or the one who controls the points from the net, it's the guy who can do both.

The Souhegan high school football team are the owners of three straight Division III titles and they've proven they can do it any way that suits them. For years they rode the brothers Jellison ground game express to titles before changing up a year ago when it was 6'4 quarterback Mike Luks throwing the ball 40 times a game.

Both styles were equally effective and in 2011 as the Sabers, led by veteran head coach Mike Beliveau, bring in multiple new faces on both sides of the ball it will be the style that gives them the best chance at their fourth straight title that will be chosen as the season goes along.

We take our New Hampshire Sportspage football previews to Division III where one team has dominated in recent years but several look in the mix to change all that in 2011.

The talk last August in Division I football was all about the defending champs; was anyone going to slow that Salem offense down?

The talk in September turned to Nashua North and Concord high school. North looked like the most complete team in the division and Concord was back in the conversation again.  Salem's offense was potent as expected but they were losing shoot-outs. Down the road Pinkerton was good but boy would they be really good in 2011 with all that young talent.

In October there were signs of life from the previous two champions; Salem and Nashua South. North still looked like your most complete team though and boy those kids at Pinkerton Academy were starting to grow up right in front of our eyes.

By November though there was only one team you were talking about; Pinkerton's 2011 run showed up a year early. Those kids were ready all along as it turns out and senior dominated teams were knocked off left and right as Pinkerton won with senior leadership (Luke Somers) and loads of young talent.

Can they repeat that feat again this year?

Today we take a look at Division I football, a division still up for grabs and where the champs aren't the only team with talent galore.

There is some truth to the notion that unless you reside in Manchester, Derry, Nashua or the seacoast you are going to have to earn the spotlight. The biggest newspapers and radio stations in the state aren't going to spend a ton of time on what they are doing out by the Vermont border and even the local papers tend to be short on staff & coverage. So if you're going to get everyone's attention you need to become a story people want to follow. Oh and you have to win a lot of football games too.

Lebanon high school did both in 2010. They were annually a team that looked like a group of kids staying in shape for basketball & baseball season and this was a division ruled by Plymouth and their Hall of Fame coach after all.

All of our attention last August was on one of the longest winning streaks in the country and a new neighbor from a catholic high school in Manchester. The Red Raiders fell squarely into ‘that would be a nice story if they were able to sneak into the playoffs' territory. Those stories don't get a ton of coverage either.
