Farewell to a legend...

IT'S BACK! The most electrifying listicle in sports today, Justin McIsaac’s Top 10! We've streamlined the voting process this year, only Justin McIsaacs can vote in the Top 10. Unless I just completely made that up. Anyway...

10. 1 > 11

Winnacunnet was the underdog going into a match up with defending State Champ Bedford, no doubt about it. And the Warriors were WELL AWARE that all the pundits in NH were picking the Bulldogs to pick up a W in Hampton on Friday night. They had a message in the locker room that reminded WHS that 11 media members had picked against them, on their home field.

Not that they needed the extra motivation, but I’m sure an extra chip on the shoulder didn’t hurt. Winnacunnet turned in a terrific defensive performance in a 20-8 win over Bedford. And, lead by Ryan Hanson, the WHS kids reminded me that, yes, we here at NHSportspage were all wrong. Winnacunnet won’t have much time to crow about the W though, as they head to Exeter to face what will surely be an ANGRY Exeter team on Saturday in a big rivalry game with playoff implications.

9. THE GUY IN THE VERIZON COMMERCIAL WITH OBJ CAN DIE IN A FIRE

“Technical Foul!”   HAHA GET IT HE DOESN’T KNOW FOOTBALL TERMINOLOGY. I’m not sure why you’d want to annoy football fans in a commercial that stars one of the most recognizable football stars out there, but I guess that’s why I’m not an ad executive.

8. FELEIPE FRANKS TO TYRIE CLEVELAND

By all accounts the Florida v Tennessee game was… not great. I didn’t see anything but the end, but by all accounts on twitter it was pretty sloppy. HOWEVER, if you get a 63 yard Hail Mary for an SEC win, the game becomes a lot more palatable.

7. KENNETT BOUNCES BACK

Former Eagles QB Will Pollard was bummed out in Alabama, traveling with the UNH WIldcats last week when he learned that Plymouth had their way with Kennett, but KHS is in the win column with a 23-6 over MV. We’re just 2 games in but D2 North is sure to be a dog fight for a playoff spot.

6. THE SOMERSWORTH BLUEGRASS FESTIVAL

What? Well, it isn’t all that noteworthy, aside from the fact that it takes place at Somersworth High’s Memorial Field. Which has forced the Hilltoppers and Epping-Newmarket Blue Devils to play on Sunday Night (I’m writing this on Sunday night so I have no idea who wins – or if Faith Hill shows up).

5. GRIZZLED

Winnacunnet wasn’t the only team to get an upset win using outstanding D on Friday – the Goffstown Grizzlies beat Exeter using stifling defense and a dynamic running game to get a 28-7 W. With Bedford’s loss, Goffstown has an early edge in D1 North.

4. ALL OF THE PATRIOTS SKILL PLAYERS ARE BANGED UP

Or maybe it just feels that way. Gronk, Burkhead, Hogan, Dorsett… anyone left to play offense next week or nah? Call up Randy Moss, I bet he’s got 2-3 good games left in him, and while you’re at it, call Stanley Morgan, Ben Coates, Troy Brown, Hart Lee Dykes, and anyone else you can think of to give TB12 someone to throw the rock to.

3. RIP BOBBY “THE BRAIN” HEENAN

Ah man, this one hurts. There wasn’t a better manager in the history of Pro Wrestling than Bobby Heenan. There might not have been a better heel announcer than Bobby The Brain either. If you watched wrestling in the 80’s and 90’s, you know exactly what I’m talking about. I got a chance to meet “The Brain” once in Las Vegas, he couldn’t have been nicer. RIP to a legend.

2. BOY DID SOUTH NEED A WIN

And they got one, surprising me by beating Merrimack 27-20. South’s a good team, but a tough opening schedule with Salem and Pinkerton got them off to an 0-2 start. It doesn’t get a whole lot easier with a rivalry game vs North, so beating Merrimack was imperative.

1. PUT EM IN A BODY BAG JOHNNY!

Dover scored 7 touchdowns against Concord, and my boy Johnny Cantwell accounted for 6 of those. 3 rushing, 2 returning, and 1 passing in the Green Wave’s 48-30 win over Concord. Cantwell ended up 106 yards rushing AND 106 passing, which seems really hard to do, getting the totals exact like that. After the game Cantwell got back to work on the construction of the new Dover High School. The kid does it all.

ALSO RECEIVING VOTES: I am no longer unbeaten as a UNH color commentator, Gronk’s spike just landed back on earth, The Falcons opened up their new stadium last night but let’s not forget that they blew a 28-3 lead, The T-Mobile/Netflix commercial is also horrible
