Nick Boucher & Campbell take on Monadnock with the title on the line

As we do for the semifinal games in basketball, we hand over the championship game previews to the people who know these teams better than anyone; the opposing coaches from their division.

We asked Division III coaches to break down Saturday’s championship game between undefeated Campbell and fellow unbeaten Monadnock.

We will bring you all the highlights of Saturday’s title game plus the post-game interview on the field with the entire team.

This match-up guarantees one thing; the winner will be doing the undefeated dance with Pete Tarrier on the field at UNH.

The Cougars & the Huskies have been watching each other from across the bracket for three weeks and now will finally settle once & for all who the best team is in Division III.

We asked opposing coaches to break down the match-up for us.

“The #1 thing you have to prepare for when you play Campbell is their speed & aggressiveness. Not only in their players, who are very fast but how quickly they get the ball to their two running backs Ryan Yanuszewski ((Click for Ryan's player profile page) & Keegan Mills (Click for Keegan's player profile page).”

A fellow coach agreed, “I love how they use the direct snap to get the ball into their (running backs) hands so quickly. They eliminate all the time taken for the snap to reach the quarterback and then the hand off, it’s simply the ball snaps directly to one of the backs and they hit the hole immediately. Some coaches might feel like they lose the ability to run misdirection on you by direct snapping to the running back but they’d be wrong. They also do a very good job catching you out of position. I love the offense Greg (Gush) has his team running.”

“Monadnock is very disciplined, as disciplined as any team we faced all year,” said one Division III playoff coach. “You try to get them with misdirection but nope, they stay on their assignment and make plays. They are extremely well coached by Ryan Avery and his staff.”

“Discipline will be a key because not only can Mills beat you running the ball but he can run the sweep and then throw the football to a kid like Nick Boucher. Greg (Gush) has everyone understanding their role and they have everything you want; a big back, a fast back, a good offensive line…this is a very good football team.”

One coach made a comparison of the four running backs that will carry most of the load on Saturday. “Chandler Matson (of Monadnock) plays a lot like Keegan Mills, a strong back who can shed tacklers. Tim Hart (of Monadnock) is the speed back, and he plays a lot like Ryan Yanuszewski.”

Can Monadnock win the game with their running game? “I think they can. They have great size down the line all the way to their tight end. To beat Campbell I think you have to be able to get your backs out to the edge with the football. A lot of teams simply can’t do that, Campbell’s linebackers are just too good, but I believe that Monadnock can and that’s why I think they can win the game.”

So who wins the game on Saturday?

“I honestly think it’s a toss-up,” said one playoff coach. “What team makes the costly turnover? What team has a kid coming up too aggressively to make a stop on the run and has the ball thrown over his head for a big play? One thing teams need to know about Monadnock; Tim Santaw their quarterback can really throw the football. Do not be fooled into thinking he can’t.”

“I like Campbell to win in a close one,” predicted another playoff coach. “ Campbell will go for two points on every conversion and will onside kick to a player they want to target. They scout very well and have an aggressive nature to it that keeps you on your toes the entire football game.”
