Nashua North lefty Kyle McCarthy won a battle of aces neither deserved to lose as the Titans knocked Salem out of the Division I Baseball Tournament 1-0.
A Dmitri Jackson double scored an unearned run off of Salem starter Dan Morin in the 4th inning and would prove to be the only offense of the afternoon as the two teams combined for only seven hits.
Jackson had a pair of hits, matching the total of the entire Salem team, while shortstop Brendan Martin, catcher Matt Fortin and designated hitter John Vidal were the only other Nashua North batters to hit safely against Morin.
McCarthy struck out nine batters and walked only three for the complete game win. On the other side Morin gave up only five hits, walked three and struck out five. The lone run of the game he allowed was unearned.

It took not only eighteen tournament games but a few extra innings on Thursday afternoon for someone in
Division II to beat Portsmouth when their season was on the line. When Lebanon's Jacob Davis crossed home plate in the top of the 10th inning ahead of a Matt Feeney throw to first (in an attempted double-play) it gave the visitors
a 2-1 lead and would prove to be the run that ended a dynasty. The Clippers would get a runner on in the bottom of the 10th against Lebanon reliever Colin MacNamee but as had been the case all day, they were unable to put a rally together against the #3 seed.
Portsmouth ace Rick Holt (7-2) was outstanding but was undone by the unearned run in the 10th. A two base throwing error by Feeney put Davis on and even with strong relief work out of the bullpen by lounge member Kyle DiCesare the Clippers weren't able to get out of the winning unscathed.
Holt and Lebanon ace Brady Boisvert (10-0) would only give up 7 singles combined on the day as the Red Raiders advance to the Division II championship game where they will meet the winner of St. Thomas & Bedford.

Hopkinton is getting pretty good at this come from behind thing, and they are moving on to the Division III championship game because of it.
After players' lounge member Devin Springfield gave Conant a 3-2 lead in the top of the 3rd inning Hopkinton held the Orioles in check behind ace Sam Bonifant (7 IP, 8 SO, 5 H 1 BB) the rest of the way.
The Hawks still trailed by a single run until Steve Auger's two out two run single off of Springfield in the 6th inning put them on top to stay 4-3.
Bonifant finished off Conant in their final at bat and Hopkinton now moves on to face Campbell in this weekend's final. Auger and Jay White each collected two hits for the Hawks while Sam McManus and Colin O'Keeffe each knocked in runs for the top seed.

Hopkinton's Liam McNicholas is starting to realize he has a flair for the dramatic.
Three months after hitting the game winning three pointer to knock defending Division III basketball
champion Somersworth out of the tournament McNicholas came through again when the season was moments from being over. Down to their last out a bases loaded double into left field scored three runs and lifted the top seed in Division III from a 6-4 deficit against a very game Franklin ball club.
In the bottom of the 7th, McManus led off with a ground out but Jake Nelson then singled up the
middle to get the rally started. After Matt McCormack struck out on a high fastball Sam Bonifant kept the Hawks alive with an infield single and Jay White walked to load the bases. This brought up McNicholas who hit a 2-0 pitch into
the left centerfield gap to score all three runs.
Hopkinton starter Jay White pitched 6 strong innings and Sam McManus came on to record the win as The Hawks 7-6 come from behind win sends them to the Division III semifinals to face Conant Wednesday night at 7 p.m.

Salem jumped out to a 1-0 lead on Manchester Memorial starting pitcher Vinny Langella after a Mitch Dufton sacrifice fly, but it would turn out to be their only run of the game. Reliever Zach Beckworth shut down the Blue Devils over five scoreless innings in a 2-1 win that advances the Crusaders to the Division I quarterfinal.
Langella, who gave up one run over two innings, helped his own cause with an RBI single that scored
Jacob Boylan (3 for 3 at the plate)in the 3rd that would prove to be the game winner. Salem starter Dan Peters pitched very well in defeat; scattering seven hits and allowing only one earned run. A Matt Barbin throwing error cost the
Blue Devils though and they were never able to get to Zach Beckworth.
Beckworth was able to scatter five hits and strike out six as Memorial beat Salem in a close game for

From Monday
For the second time in two epic meetings this season Portsmouth held a late inning lead on St. Thomas and starting pitcher Ricky Holt was in trouble.
After pitching lights out for six innings the Clippers ace was spent and in came players' lounge member Kyle DiCesare, owner of two state titles already in his senior season, for the save. DiCesare got Portsmouth out of the jam with both his right arm and his glove, or more accurately, his bare hand. DiCesare made a bare handed stab at a shot up the middle that he then turned into a 1-4-3 double play that would prove to be the Saints last shot at another come from behind win.
Portsmouth stays in the hunt for the top seed in the Division II with a 4-2 win over their arch-rival and sets the stage for a possible rubber match down the line. DiCesare and shortstop Billy Hartmann had key RBI's as Tim Hopley's team moved to 14-1 with only a meeting today with Oyster River remaining.

Salem buried Nashua South with four runs in the 3rd innings and cruised to a 12-2 win behind a complete game performance from Clayton Landers. For the Blue Devils it was their seventh win in eight games and further proof that no team in Division I is playing any better than Salem as the regular season moves into its final week.
The Blue devils held a 1-0 lead going into the 3rd inning against Panthers starting pitcher Ted Christie when Joe Lemenger led off with a single. A Mike Downing sacrifice fly would score the run but Salem tacked on three more runs on a Mitch Dufton double, a Jake White single and a Nashua South throwing error that scored Dan Morin.
On the afternoon Salem's 1 thru 4 hitters (Lemenger, Downing, Trevor Bouvier & Dufton) would go a combined 7 for 12 with 9 RBI's.

Salem erased an early two run deficit with two runs of their own in the 4th inning and scored the game winner in the bottom of the sixth on a Mitch Dufton double as the Blue Devils improve to 7-9 after a 3-2 win over Dover Monday afternoon.
Clayton Landers went seven strong innings for the win as he scattered 5 hits and five walks. The defense though played well behind him and Dufton's single in the 4th knotted the game at two heading into the fifth. Trevor Bouvier (2 for 3 on the day) singled with one out in the sixth and scored when Dufton doubled off of Dover starter Ty Cash. Landers was able to set down the Green Wave in their final at bat when, after a two out single by Cash, Landers was able to get Adam Arkel to fly out to right to end the game.
Cash pitched well in defeat, surrendering only two earned runs and striking out five in six innings of work.

Salem needed a big start from their ace Dan Peters and got it. Vinny Langella though was just a little better...
While Peters scattered 6 hits in a strong complete game effort Manchester Memorial ace Vinny Langella handcuffed the Blue Devils in a complete game, two hit shutout performance. Langella struck out 7 and didn't walk a batter in leading his team to a 2-0 win that improves the Crusaders to 9-4 on the season.
Memorial's Tyler Burke singled with one out in a scoreless game in the 3rd inning and came home on a Chaz Newton single. The Crusaders then added an insurance run in the 5th when Bryant Bettez, who led off the inning with a single, scored on a wild pitch from Peters.
For Salem (who drops to 5-9) first baseman Clayton Landers and catcher Jake White had the lone hits of the game as Langella was dominant from start to finish. Four champions were crowned Saturday in New Hampshire baseball, including one return titlist in the Portsmouth Clippers, who won their fourth title in four years, extending their nation-leading consecutive win steak to 83 games in the process.
The Division II championship game, the Prime Time contest of the day, was delayed by passing storms and the scheduled 7 p.m. game did not start until after 10 p.m. It was not until close to 1 a.m. Sunday that Portsmouth reliever Keegan Taylor secured the last out that beat Seacoast rival St. Thomas Aquinas, ending a day that began at 10 a.m. at Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester.

Someone found a 220-yr.-old letter written by Abigail Adams in a desk drawer this spring. "I find it the most troublesome removal I have ever made," she wrote to an uncle. Hardly earth-shattering, given the voluminous breadth of correspondence between Abigail and others, especially her husband, John Adams, more than 200 years ago.
On June 18 in 1948 Columbia Records unveiled a new 33 1/3 RPM long-playing vinyl record, which transformed the music industry. And on June 18 in 1923 the first Checker Cab rolled off the assembly line in Michigan.
On June 18 this year four high school baseball titles will be decided at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium in Manchester. In the premier game at 7 p.m., the Portsmouth Clippers can secure their fourth consecutive state title in Division II, while Somersworth, with its wealth of upperclass talent, can win a division crown on its second try in two years, after dispatching nemesis Winnisquam in the semifinals last weekend.
Sunapee in Division IV and Nashua North in the state's top division can also cement their places at the top of New Hampshire high school baseball as the best teams of 2011 with wins this weekend.

Concord high school jumped out to a 5-0 lead on second ranked Salem behind an early Graham McIntyre two run homer and held on for an 8-6 upset win that puts them in the Division I championship game against top ranked Nashua North.
Patrick Cannon's 2nd inning triple knocked in two runs and staked Concord to an early advantage before Salem battled back. A two run double by Joe Morin in the fourth inning got the Blue Devils all the way back to 5-5 but the momentum swung back to Concord as quickly as Salem had earned it. Concord's Cody Ferns hit a two out/two run double in the fifth that put Concord back on top to stay 7-5.
Dillon Emerson then came on in relief and shut down a very good Salem offense over the last 1 2/3 innings for the save and the biggest win of the season.

Best team in the Granite State?
Oh, if only Portsmouth could meet Nashua North for a mythical overall state title.
Or perhaps Winnisquam with Jordan Cote on the mound vs. either of those two clubs.
That will never happen, of course, but two games coming up this weekend look intriguing; Division II Portsmouth vs. Bedford, a team that was barely put together when the Clippers started their 81-game run four years ago, and Winnisquam vs. Somersworth in Division III, where Jordan Cote has owned the Hilltoppers over the past year, defeating Somersworth twice, including last June for the D-3 state title.
The 2011 season has come down to 16 teams in four divisions.
Thursday and Friday. Eight games, all with multiple sub-plots.
Four June 18 state title contests on the line.
This should be fun.

Dover ace Ian Seawards was dominate in a complete game performance that saw him give up only one run against a high powered Salem offense.
Problem was, Salem starter Evan Breen was even better.
In a game that didn't have the looks of a pitchers dual when Salem right fielder Mike Downing scored on a Josh Treff single in the first, two very effective starting pitchers traded goose eggs for the remainder of the game. Dover though was held to only a Steve Carlburg single in the fourth and never got that lone run back.
Seawards scattered six hits over six full innings while Breen pitched a complete game one hitter with six strikeouts.
The Blue Devils, who lost in the championship game a year ago to Londonderry, now move on to Thursday's semifinal match-up with Concord.

A one-run first inning without the benefit of a base hit and a four-run second led to an early 5-0 lead and a 7-4 Timberlane win over Winnacunnet Saturday in Hampton in the Division I quarterfinals, and propelled the 8-12 Owls to a semifinal date with division power Nashua North later this week.
It was a long day at the office for the home Warriors. In front of more than a hundred fans on a cool but bright afternoon, Winnacunnet fell behind early, which can give one team momentum and make the other team press.
"It's absolutely important to get an early lead, no matter what level of ball or what sport you're playing," Timberlane Head Coach Jamie Fish said. "It dictates the rest of the action."

We'd like to introduce our newest sponsor; Chad Fletcher of Bluewater Mortgage in Hampton will be sponsoring the coverage of Exeter high school. Bluewater is one of the top mortgage companies on the New Hampshire seacoast and the 23rd business to join New Hampshire Sportspage in supporting high school athletics in the Granite state.
The playoffs begin Thursday, and in three divisions the pairings have been announced and posted on the NHIAA's Web site. Only Division III had yet to be officially posted by 7 p.m. Wednesday, though regular division play ended last week.
As expected, Nashua North, Portsmouth and Sunapee were installed as No. 1 seeds in divisions I, II, and IV respectively. In Division III, Somersworth, with a 15-1 record, won the regular season and is expected to host No. 16, likely Bow High School, in this week's preliminary round.
Thursday's preliminary round will pare the number of tournament teams from 64 to 32. The quarterfinals are set for this weekend. The finals are scheduled to be played on Saturday, June 18.

The second seeded Blue Devils of Salem broke up a 1-1 tie ballgame with a 6 run fourth inning on route to a 7-2 win that earns them a spot in this weekends Quarterfinal round.
Salem benefited from a key Manchester Memorial error in the fourth and scored twice on a Mike Downing triple. Joe DiPalma then followed up another Crusaders miscue with a two run double to put Salem up for good 7-1.
Dan Peters went four strong innings for the win while Evan Breen and Clayton Landers pitched three innings of one run ball to seal the win. The Blue Devils now move on to face Dover in the round of 8. The Green Wave defeated defending champion Londonderry earlier today.
For Memorial Tim Sullivan was a tough luck loser, giving up only one earned run but allowing six Salem runners to score. Sullivan and Zach Beckswith led the offensive attack with a pair of hits but one bad inning proved to be too much to overcome.

Well, The Rapture seems to be delayed somewhat, so baseball will continue for awhile (Though I hope the ‘Rapture Pet Cure' I ordered gets delivered).
Don't forget; there will be no striper fishing off the New Hampshire shore without a fishing license this summer, thanks to the NH Fish & Game Dept., which seems to think the state owns the Atlantic Ocean.
The F&G also advises against feeding bears, after a 55-year-old Center Harbor woman was attacked last weekend on her rear deck. Jacqueline Berghorn heard her dog barking, went out "to investigate," according to the F&G, and saw the black bear 10 feet away. She high-tailed it for the sliding glass doors but the bear grazed her shoulders before turning and wandering off. F&G bear project leader Andrew Timmins said a habit by former neighbors of feeding bears likely contributed in the May 22 incident.
It seems only last week that snow clung to the outfield fences at baseball parks hereabouts. I wonder if it still clings to the fences in the back woods north of the Whites... but suddenly it's time to plant the vegetable garden... and think about playoff seedings.

Salem picked up a key win Thursday afternoon as they remain alive for a shot at the top seed in the Division I tourney which starts next week.
After falling behind 6-4 after two innings the Blue Devils knocked Dover starter Ian Seawards out of the game with a six run third inning highlighted by four straight hits by Joe Morin, Joe DiPalma, Matt Barbin and Zachary Stevens (with an Alex Stewart walk sandwiched in between). Barbin and Josh Treff combined for two scoreless innings to seal the victory and keep Salem's hopes for the top seed alive. With the win Salem can now finish no lower than the two seed in the tourney.

The last time Portsmouth High School lost a baseball game ‘Die Hard 4' and ‘Ocean's 13' were playing in local movie theaters, a gallon of gas cost $3.32, Coca Cola had just recently stopped marketing Black Cherry Vanilla Coke, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average sat at around 13,600.
In June 2007, both Portsmouth and Hollis Brookline were in the large school division when the Cavaliers beat the Clippers in the '07 playoffs. Hollis Brookline went on to play in the state title game, and Portsmouth's baseballers moved on to summer pursuits.

Since then a lot has happened. The stock market crashed then recovered and gas prices have steadily, gradually risen. The price of an ounce of gold - not to mention silver - has spiked to where some people are selling the family jewelry to shylocks looking for a quick buck. Both Portsmouth and Hollis Brookline dropped a level in baseball as school enrollment has declined. Reuters reported this week that a Australian Rules footballer was sent off the field for having a "dangerous haircut," a spiked Mohawk, in a minor league match in Melbourne last weekend.
The Franklin Pierce University baseball team finished the season third in the Northeast-10 Conference at 35-11 overall last week. The No. 15/22 nationally ranked and third-seeded Ravens begin their quest for a fifth Northeast-10 Conference championship against sixth-seeded Stonehill this week.
The FP roster includes Granite Staters T.J Ferguson (Keene HS grad), Peter Wilber (Keene), Kevin McGowen (Nashua North), Eric Pearson (Merrimack Valley), and Riley Palmer (Goffstown).
Franklin Pierce will graduate 589 students at its 46th commencement this Saturday at its Rindge campus, including the pride of Berlin, Mass., Alycia Brandt, who hopes to make her mark in the broadcasting business, following a temporary gig as a waitress at the Boardwalk restaurant at Hampton Beach this summer.
Back at the ranch, just past the midway point of the high school baseball season, some clubs are overachieving while others falter after promising pre-season expectations. Londonderry, last year's Class champion, has struggled this spring, with five loses on the year so far.

It was the starting pitching of Chris Lekkas and the relief work of Zach Mitsopolous (who went 1 1/3 innings to earn the save) that held a Salem offense to only five hits and a single run.

Rain-infused pollen-infested spring air is so seductive I wish I could capture and bottle it... save it for those dark quick February nights when hope is dim and you just hope the boiler doesn't break down.
The Bumblebees are up three games to none against the Flyers. Does this ring any bells? At any rate...
Not going to release the Bin Laden photos? What's up with this Obama guy?
You just can't trust him, my neighbor says.
In fact, Osama Bin Laden was not cornered and shot in the head in Abbottabad last Sunday, but is alive and living in New Jersey with Snooki. The reported death of the man was all a contrivance perpetrated on the American public solely to increase Democrats' 2012 re-election prospects.
I know, because I had a vision one late night this week that the alleged death of the world's most infamous terrorist was really a CIA-backed covert operation (by the same people who manufactured that Hawaii live-birth document) and the guy actually shot in that bedroom raid was, in fact, Che Guevara, who was not killed in 1967 but survived until this week, and who actually was the subject of clandestine experiments that reversed the aging process and caused Guevara to actually grow younger. Presumably, the iconic Marxist theorist and activist was about to lead an action against our friends the Pakistanis and had to be, well, eliminated. Which he was. And dumped into the ocean.
Seriously, the more I hear from the TV nightly news or read in the NY Times, the more I think we don't know anything about what's really happening. Invisible helicopters? Shooting at men in robes shielded by women? Hot dogs taste good, but who wants to know what's in them? With a little mustard & relish, they taste great.

President Barack Obama produced a long-form birth certificate this week that, he hopes, should put to rest the persistent questions about his qualifications to be our Commander-In-Chief. This presumably will allow The Donald (the carnival barker, by the way, visited New Hampshire this week with his I'm-So-Important side-show) to move on to other deep national questions (Obama's college grades?). Donny Trump, presidential material?... LOL.
Two Maine guys are developing a practice golf ball made from lobster shells that will biodegrade when hit into the ocean... from, say, cruise ships at sea (hitting golf balls from ships has been banned in some locales because they pollute the ocean) or from the sand at Plaice Cove on the New Hampshire Seacoast, as some neighbors of mine are wont to do on occasion.
These two entrepreneurs claim the balls fly "almost" as far as other driving range balls and will retail for less than their alleged environment-polluting counterparts. The duo is also working on a biodegradable flower pot.

HAMPTON - Londonderry's Dan Kinnon mesmerized the Warriors with a 14-strikeout, one-hit, three walk complete game performance against Winnacunnet Friday, raising his record to 2-0 on the season as the Lancers easily defeated the Winnacunnet 6-0 at Tom Blair Field in Hampton. Londonderry improved to 3-2 on the year with the win; Winnacunnet High dropped to 2-3 on the young season.
"Dan threw a gem today," said Londonderry coach Steve Desjarlais of his junior lefty starter. "His curveball was unbelievable, he threw his fastball where he wanted to, it was his best start of the year."
Even Winnacunnet head coach Jared Liebenow praised the Lancer hurler, who is not even Londonderry's staff ace. "Kinnon was very good today. His fastball, curve... and he put the ball where he wanted to," Liebenow said.

To celebrate the season and drum up a little enthusiasm (not that Queen City baseball fans need any prompting), Manchester West head coach John Kyriacopulos organized a jamboree this spring, inviting the four city teams (Memorial, Central, West, and Trinity) to a four-game elimination on the second weekend of the month.
Manchester Mayor Ted Gatsis threw out the first ball (and won the 50/50 raffle, Kyriacopulos reported, "but he gave his half of the winnings back, which was very nice of him"). For the record, Memorial beat West for the inaugural and unofficial city title.
"We had a $5 admission, we had sponsors, we had a good crowd and there was a lot of enthusiasm. It was a good weekend," Kyriacopulos said.
In other news, the Celtics take on the Knicks in NYC Friday up 2-0 in their playoff series (I'll say Boston in 5)... and the Boston Bumblebees, who practiced in Lake Placid this week (wonder why?), could tie up their series with Montreal tonight at the Forum (Any bets on the table?).

The suddenly average Celtics limped toward the playoffs over the last several weeks, barely playing .500 basketball, and the Red Sox have the worst record in major league baseball. Tampa Bay's Sam Fuld, however, made some local baseball fans proud as the 29-year old Granite State product (Phillips Exeter Academy, Dover Post 8 American Legion before attending Stanford) drilled a two-run homer with a double and triple in Monday's game and played solid in the field this week.
While Wednesday's wall of rain cancelled most high school sports hereabouts, Monday's diamond openers produced some mild surprises, notably Dover defeating St. Thomas Aquinas, Bedford upending Souhegan, and Timberlane inching past Pinkerton.
The road to the June state finals began Monday under a mostly sunny sky and un-April-like temperatures statewide. Even a few clubs north of the Whites got to toss the ball around, despite lingering snow piles behind the outfield fences.
Most clubs have holes to fill this spring, others face major rebuilding, while four are defending championship season in 2010. A look at a few games to watch this Friday...

The federal government remains open for business, despite threats last week to the contrary; that great harbinger of spring, the Boston Marathon, is just days away; the Red Sox are off to their worse start in half a century; and Bobby Butler scored Ottawa's only goal in a 3-1 loss to the Bruins Saturday night. Butler, remember, played college hockey in Durham with UNH.
In New Hampshire, high school baseball teams are now listed in divisions, two Seacoast teams open the season as defending state champs, and there's still snow in the North Country.
The high school baseball season begins Monday. Look for newcomers Bedford and Portsmouth Christian to be in the thick of the battle this season in divisions 2 and 4, while the Seacoast-based Clippers COULD set a national record for consecutive wins in May... and Winnisquam brings a talented squad back from its state title squad of 2010. Often there comes a point in a long season when a team at the crossroads faces its demons, and finds a spirit that turns a potentially disastrous season into a great one. That happened to Winnisquam High and Portsmouth Christian Academy this spring, sometime in late April.
Portsmouth Christian opened the spring without a win in two weeks.
“After we started out 0-3 I had my doubts, but the kids… started playing better, started to believe in themselves, and it just went from there,” PCA head coach Chip Andrews recalled after his club beat North Country power Pittsburg to win the Class S crown on June 12.
At Winnisquam High School it was an early-season loss that prompted the pivotal soul-searching. “After the Mascoma loss we took a look at ourselves and realized we had to work hard every time out… and we did,” coach Fred Caruso recalled recently. And the Bears went on to compile a 19-2 record and beat favored – and previously unbeaten – Somersworth to win the Class M title.

Sean McKenna's triple to deep left in the top of the seventh inning plated pinch runner Andrew Cunningham with the go-ahead run and Portsmouth Christian Academy upset Pittsburg, winning the Class S baseball title 2-1 in an intermittent drizzle at Merchantsauto.com Stadium Saturday.
McKenna, a sophomore, pitched a complete game in giving the Eagles their first-ever state championship, scattering six hits and striking out four, though he walked five batters in his seven innings of work.
Portsmouth Christian head coach Chip Andrews said his sophomore pitched a great game. "He had his curve ball and his off-speed stuff going. He kept batters off balance," Andrews said, adding that the playoff run had left the Eagles a "little short" in the bullpen. "Good thing Sean came through for us because he's all I had today," Andrews remarked.

Jordan Cote of Winnisquam threw a no-hitter on the biggest stage
Somersworth's knack for pulling off come-from-behind wins this year came to a grinding halt Saturday, as the Hilltoppers could not figure out Winnisquam's Jordan Cote's fast ball, or his occasional curve, on a mild but damp Saturday morning at Manchester's Merchantsauto.com Stadium.
The Winnisquam righty no-hit the #1 seeded and unbeaten Hilltoppers, striking out seven while walking two - both in the fourth inning - in a 2-0 win that gave the Bears their first Class M championship in the school's history.
"Jordan has been the ace of the staff all season long," said Winnisquam head coach Fred Caruso. "And to come in against an undefeated team was too much to ask of him. But the kid has ice water in his veins." The coach added that Cote has a great work ethic, and "was out at 7:30 this morning taking batting practice."

Keegan Taylor and Portsmouth are one win away from another Class I title
A flurry of music and dance opened the 2010 World Cup in the purest sport on Earth Thursday. On domestic ground, will Paul Pierce ever show up vs. the West Coast. And can old man Tim Wakefield shake off the years and make the knuckler flutter before he's sent out to pasture?
Closer to home, the Bishop Guertin boys captured the Division 1 lacrosse title this week in Nashua, beating Exeter 15-10. In Division 2, Bow High School prevailed 14-13 over the Bedford Bulldogs in extra time. Derryfield defeated Kingswood in Div. 3, 12-11.
The Hollis Brookline girls made all of Souhegan Valley proud, taking the girls' Division 3 lacrosse crown over Kearsarge 10-4 at Southern New Hampshire University.
And whatever happened to Spartan Dwight Barbiasz, who leapt seven feet in the high jump three years ago for MHS?
(Other questions persist. Will open conflict darken the Korean peninsula before August, and is all that crude ever going to stop gushing into the Gulf (I'm just lucky I listened to my bride and didn't buy shares in BP last month, despite my broker's recommendation).
Which brings us to New Hampshire schoolboy baseball.

Does Somersworth have one more celebration left?
(1) Somersworth vs. (2) Winnisquam Regional
Getting to the final game in high school baseball is lot trickier than it is in football or basketball. In baseball you're going to have to juggle two, maybe even three starting pitchers and there is some risk involved as to when you throw your ace and when you hold him back.
That is why you'll see more 14 seeds over 3 seeds in baseball then any other sport and 9 times out of 10 times it turns out to be a case of a #2 starter getting the nod so the ace of the staff could be held out for a quarterfinal round game that never materializes. There is no worse feeling in sports than losing a game with your best player watching from the sidelines.
A lot of people feel like this is the flaw with high school baseball. They argue that a lousy team can have one very good pitcher and on any given day beat any team in the state. 15th seed Pinkerton knocked off 2nd seeded Goffstown in the first round only to then give up 20 runs in the next round to Keene. The Yankees may be the best team in baseball on most nights (God do I hate writing that...) but every five days the Colorado Rockies throw Ubaldo Jimenz, and every five days they and not the Yankees are the best team in baseball.

Tuesday's semifinal match-ups include one game between rivals that met in last year's playoffs, and a #1 vs. #4 contest between two clubs that already met once the regular season.
(1) Nashua North vs. (4) Salem
This interesting contest features two southern NH teams that know each other well.
#1 seed Nashua North defeated #16 Manchester Central 8-5 last week and #9 Spaulding on Saturday to reach the semis. The best team in the regular season with an 18-3 record, North has won 15 straight, including the playoffs.
Saturday North defeated Spaulding 3-2. North's win over Central in Thursday's first round returned a favor; Central defeated North in last year's first round.
Salem, meanwhile, defeated #13 Exeter in a pitcher's duel Thursday, 2-1, then took care of Timberlane, the #12 seed, Saturday 7-5 to reach Class L's Final Four. Both clubs have a balance of offense and defense, and a mix of youth and experience. They met once this year; Salem beat North during the regular season, 8-5, on April 19.

Jake Woodward and Lebanon take on Bedford in the Class I semifinals
The semifinals in this spring's NHIAA baseball tourney are set for this Tuesday and Wednesday, and some compelling match-ups are on the menu. 2009 Class L champion Keene remains in the mix in the state's top division, and Class I Portsmouth will try to extend its 61-game winning streak when it meets Con Val.
In Class S, Pittsburg, with the Chase brothers and a strong supporting cast, is looking at a championship game berth and a second state title in two years.
The following is a quick look at the games:
Class I
Both Lebanon, a pre-season pick to go deep into the playoffs, and Bedford, which seemingly came out of nowhere after a lackluster April to reach the semifinals, loom as Portsmouth's major obstacles to a third straight state title, though the #1 Clippers have business to attend to before any talk of a Class I championship game.
