With one game left in the regular season we do our best to forecast the seedings for the upcoming Division I tournament.
There is a TON still to be decided on Friday night so this is strictly an educated prediction of where we will be when the NHIAA officially announces the bracket.
I'll be taping a Division II tournament preview/podcast that will be up early next week.
Our column is brought to you by our longtime friends and partners at Great Bay Community College!
Division I Bracketology:
Bedford
Pinkerton
Nashua North
Nashua South
Bishop Guertin
Exeter
Windham
Trinity
Portsmouth
Winnacunnet
Goffstown
Alvirne
Merrimack
Salem
Londonderry
Notes:
We have Bedford projected with the best record against tournament teams in this configuration (first time I’ve used that word in a long time..), but remember that if Keene, Concord, Manchester Memorial, or Timberlane get in, that alters the record vs. tournament teams. We are projecting that after Friday night, all three teams at the top will be 17-1 and seeded in that order.
If your head hurts already, just wait until we get to the final two teams in….
If Nashua South beats Portsmouth at home, they are the four-seed
With BG’s win over Exeter on Tuesday night, they are the five-seed today. We’re projecting they beat Windham on Friday night, and Exeter ends up at six with a win over Keene.
We project Trinity wins over Timberlane and earns the eighth seed while we have South beating Portsmouth at home; the Clippers would travel to Manchester in the 8/9 game next week.
Winnacunnet is locked in at the ten spot.
Here’s where it really gets tricky…………
We are projecting Goffstown to beat Alvirne only because the game is at Goffstown. If Alvirne wins, they are the eleven seed.
We are projecting Merrimack to lose to Pinkerton. If Goffstown wins, it’s as listed above. If Alvirne wins, it’s Alvirne 11, Merrimack 12, and Goffstown 13 because Merrimack beat Goffstown head-to-head.
Teams alive for the last two spots; Salem, Londonderry, Keene, Manchester Memorial, Timberlane and Concord.
Dover was eliminated after their loss to Keene.
Concord is done at 6-12, Salem (6-11) plays Bedford.
Londonderry plays Memorial tomorrow night with both teams at 5-12. The winner is likely in and the loser definitely out.
We are projecting Londonderry over Memorial (Jaryd Piecuch’s team would close 5-2 with a win), Timberlane to lose at Trinity, Salem to lose to Bedford, and Keene to lose at home to Exeter (but for the record are not 'sleeping' on their chances to win that game).
In that scenario, Salem and Londonderry have a better record against tournament teams than Concord, giving them the final two spots.
I need to go lie down………………
