The Campbell Cougars capture a win in tough conditions

A cold afternoon and rain-covered soccer pitch made for a fast pace of play between Campbell and Conant girls’ soccer.

From the opening kickoff, Campbell used their speed down the sidelines to create chances. Only 20 seconds into the match, Rania Chaudhry bolted through Conant defenders, finding herself in striking distance to open the scoring early.

Conant rebounded well as a team, spending much of the next twenty minutes controlling play. Riley Vitello, Conant’s leading scorer, had her blazing speed on display. Again and again Conant found her and Rhianna Aho in space. Despite strong efforts, Conant couldn’t find the net in the first half.

Campbell pressed back, using the slick field to their advantage, they fired fast passes on the ground with precision. Abby Guerette and Amelia LaPlante both found the back of the net. LaPlante would end the match with two goals, including a beautiful header off a corner kick.

The second half started similar to the first. Campbell scored early again, this time it was LaPlante with finesse. Conant refused to go down quietly. Riley Vitello put Conant on the board with ten minutes remaining. It was her footwork, not her speed, that gave her a chance inside the box.
