Saints win after fending off late-game charge by the Fall Mountain Wildcats

In Dover, the stands at the Our Lady of Victory Stadium were packed full on both sides. A strong pack of Wildcats fans made the two-hour trip across the state to watch their girls' soccer team play an unforgettable match.

To open the scoring early, Liz Flynn ripped a shot with enough pace that it bulldozed its way through the gloves of Fall Mountain keeper, Kendal Cote. Cot was on her game with the perfect balance of aggressive positioning and restraint.

The Saints weren’t shying away from any shots. Kate Burrus made the score 2-0 with another long-range blast. It was still early. Fall Mountain could have easily felt deflated, but they surged.

Late in the first half, Avery Ducharm found herself in the perfect spot to put home a loose rebound. You could sense every fan on the bleachers had the same thought. Fall Mountain was still very much in this game. St. Thomas Aquinas 2, Fall Mountain 1 at halftime.

The second half began slowly; nobody wanted to make a costly mistake. St. Thomas had possession; Flynn was dribbling through midfield when she skipped a stretch pass up to Burrus. Burrus was past the defenders, in on a breakaway where she shot one by Cote.

With six minutes left, a costly penalty just outside the box near the sideline gave Fall Mountain a free kick to shoot from. It required the perfect shot, and that is just what Mariella Tsitsonis delivered – over the reach of the keeper, rattling the crossbar before deflecting down to the back of the net.

St. Thomas was able to stay disciplined and close out the game strong. Genna Bolduc denied the final few Fall Mountain shots and was rightfully rushed by her teammates at the final whistle.

The Saints will take on Stevens on Wednesday night in the Division III Semifinals.
