Saturday in New Ipswich was everything you want late in the season: loud gym, great volleyball, and two teams that care about the details. Mascenic hosted the second annual tri-match with Portsmouth Christian Academy and Inter-Lakes, wrapping up the day with the matchup everyone came to see: the undefeated Lakers against a young but hungry Vikings squad.
Mascenic plays with a lot of pride. They’re young, but they don’t play scared. Junior middle Lyla Somero continues to anchor both sides of the net, and Bre McCabe adds toughness at the front line. When the Vikings find rhythm, they dig, chase, and fight for every point. There’s a lot of growth happening here, and it’s easy to see why people believe in what they’re building.
Inter-Lakes, though, is the real deal. Their style is calm, efficient, and sharp. Kiera Moynihan does what she always does, but it’s the system that impresses most. Coach Randy’s rotation looks different from most teams, running both middles six rotations, and it works because everyone buys in — they know their role and embrace it for the good of the team. The Lakers’ passing and serving are so steady that they don’t have to rely on momentum, they just execute and find success.
Mascenic made them earn it, but Inter-Lakes stayed patient, disciplined, and confident. No shortcuts, no panic, just good volleyball. And with the postseason right around the corner, that’s exactly what championship teams look like.
