5:45 Update - Salem v. Windham

Salem led 16-13 after 1 in what was understandably a sloppy quarter for both teams.  Windham showed a 2-1-2 zone look to open the 2nd which managed to frustrate the Blue Devil offense as they were able to take a 27-22 lead with 2:45 left in the quarter.

Salem's Michael Felix has shown some playmaking ability getting to the rim on several occasions and working off the ball for open jumpshots to the tune of 6 first half points.  Windham's David Carbonello had 6 and Andrew Lowman 8 in the first half who played a much cleaner 2nd quarter.  Windham leads 34-28 at the half.

6:45 Update - Salem v Windham

Salem opened the 3rd with a full court trapping press which, while high energy and did force a few turnovers also game opportunities for Lowman (you have to say that with a deep voice per Justin McIsaac).  At this point in the scrimmage Lowman and Carbonello look like the guys who will make or break Windham in Division II this year.  Lowman is lanky and a bit undersized for a big, but he has a knack for the ball and can finish in traffic.  Cabonello is clearly their best ball handler and he made some impressive dribble-drives and was able to attack the Salem press in most situations without turning the ball over.

Salem's Felix and Jacob Slepian controlled the ball and distributed well throughout the 2nd half.  Sophomore Tim Dodier showed some nice moves in the paint and Brent Barrett was able to finish when provided the ball in the right spots.  Jr. PG Isiah Latham played well down the stretch with several nice assists and defensive pressure which enabled a mini-Salem comeback when down 4 with under a minute left.

As with all these games, both coaches mixed up there defensive schemes and player packages throughout the game.  A scrimmage is a scrimmage so had this been a regular season game we'd more than likely seen a different strategy throughout the game. Not to mention there's a lot of coaches who don't want to open up their playbook in an event like this.  Regardless, a great game to open the Coaches for a Cause Jamboree in Hudson this evening.

Side Note: There were A LOT of fouls called in this game.  Fouls were 24-6 at halftime with Salem hacking away the most.  Personal fouls are not counted for these games, but team fouls were.

FINAL:  Salem 67 - Windham 64

7:00 Update - Bishop Guertin v Bishop Brady

In a battle of Catholic supremacy BG and Bishop Brady kicked off Game 2 of the Coaches for a Cause Jamboree with a high energy first quarter.  While BG clearly has the size advantage with Joe Marandola, Eric Camacho and Niarhos Costas controlling the paint, Brady has the Bell Brothers advantage with Sophomore Joe and Junior Jourdain leading the Green Giants on both ends of the court.

Predictably - the first quarter here was as sloppy as the first game with multiple turnovers by both teams and ill-advised passes.  Highlight of the quarter was when Jourdain stepped in front of a BG pass beat a man down the court and used his body to create space in reverse layup fashion - while getting fouled of course.  The very next play he euro-stepped through the lane over 2 defenders bringing Brady within 3 after 1, 20-17.

7:25 Update - Bishop Guertin v Bishop Brady

BG's size continues to be a problem for Brady pushing the lead to 35-25 midway through the  second.  The Bell brothers continue to do what they do having earned 4 "and 1's" in the first half.   Brady has also been the scrappier team, hustling to the ball and earning several second chances at the rim.

Sitting next to the BG bench has its advantages…when the reserve team jacked up several three's he turned to his starters and motioned for them to get get in the game.  Once the reservers returned to the bench he proceeded to "educate" them on taking three's when you have the lead, and a distinct size advantage.  Of course the starters, now in the game, proceeded to shoot two badly missed 3's in their first possession of game action.  That earned a "What is it, contagious?" out of Mignault. This is why we play the games…

BG leads 40-35 at the half...

7:45 Update - Bishop Guertin v Bishop Brady

Brady jumped out with a 9-3 run again on the playmaking of Jourdain Bell who during the stretch hit a long jump shot, had a beautiful drive to the rim where he went through his legs to beat his defender and found a teammate for a layuop after penetrating.

Kyle Gavin and CJ Boykin provided a spark midway through the 3rd with Gavin doing nice work both inside and out of the pain while Boykin was a defensive menace ad offensive playmaker.  BG's strategy to double Jourdain whenever he gets the ball has made some opportunities for the rest of the Green Giants including Danny Fogarty who hit two jumpers to keep Brady close.  A back and forth quarter ends with Brady leading Guertin 57-55.

8:25 Update - Bishop Guertin v Bishop Brady

Back and forth 4th quarter with BG dominating the boards while their pressure would at times produce turnovers it also continues to leave the Bell brothers in position to either score at the rim or dish to teammates.  Jourdain easily has 20+ points (maybe 30+?) and is your classic risk/reward player.  There are times he does some amazing and impressive things on the court, and others where he gets himself into trouble causing turnovers and easy points on the other end.

Guertin has shown they will be a deep team, while Mignault is certainly playing with personnel match ups trying to find the best scenarios for his kids to succeed its clear there will be options in Lund Gymnasium this winter.  While no player has stood out completely, as a team they are athletic and gritty.

Jourdain took this game over down the stretch and BG had no answer despite throwing 2 and sometimes 3 defenders at him.  With :18 seconds left and down 3 he collected a missed three and finished over a larger defender while getting fouled.  The FT was good and sent the game to overtime where Brady controlled most of the period.  A CJ Boykin drive and 3 at the buzzer were too little too late for the Cardinals.

Final: Bishop Brady 84 - Bishop Guertin 83

8:37 Update - Emergency Update

Jourdain Bell had 39 points.  That is all.

8:55 Update - Merrimack v Pelham

First thing from this Merrimack/Pelham game is these are two very strong basketball teams.  And I don't mean they're "good" I mean they're physically stronger than any of the other teams we've seen tonight.

Both teams have several options led by everybody's preseason MVP Eric Gendron of Merrimack.  For Pelham big man Ryan Cloutier showed he has some range extending out to hit a 3 and bruiser Sophomore Keith Brown dong the same providing what will surely be an interesting dilemma for Python opponents this season.  Pelham up 14-11 after 1 quarter.

Love the energy in the gym as Pelham has a nice little student contingency supporting them.

9:10 Update - Merrimack v Pelham

Brown is an interesting player for the Pythons.  He's a 6'2" Sophomore who has the green light from pretty much anywhere on the court.  He brings the ball up, has the ability to pass but is clearly most comfortable on the wing.

Gendron has been as-advertised hitting pull up jumpers off the dribble and doing work on the offensive glass and in the post.  He's also a capable distributor and will help alleviate pressure when the Tomahawks are faced with a full court press.

Pelham with a barrage at the end to take a 35-33 lead.

9:40 Update - Merrimack v Pelham

Joe MacArthur has led Pelham as he and Gendron have been going back and forth scoring and distributing the ball. Shayne Bourque has been good in the post for Merrimack.  Pelham leads 52-50 after 3…

I've taken over DJ duties so game updates have taken a bit of a back seat…this is a really good game so far though.

10:00 Update - Merrimack v Pelham

Gendron just took over the 4th quarter with 2 very deep threes and several nice passes.  Merrimacks pick and roll options produced at least 4 layups. Pelham put up a good fight and MacArthur was excellent as the only consistent scoring options for the Pythons.  Both teams look to be in pretty good shape headed into the regular season.

Final: Merrimack 68 Pelham 58
