10:45 Update -

On my way to the Jamboree - first update somewhere around noon.  Stay tuned!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
12:15 Update - Alvirne v Newport
Opener this afgernoon is Alvirne and Newport.  Newport is led by Jr. Andrew Houde who's their central playmaker on offense and will guard one of the oppositions best players in most cases.  Alvirne has the pressure working early jumping out to a 14-6 lead halfway through the 1st.
12:30 Update - Alvirne v Newport
Alvirne has been getting out and running on makes and misses and now has a commanding 31-12 lead with 6:11 left in the 2nd quarter.
Dave Haley just mentioned to me that Newport is down 4 of their key reserves who had to work at a local ski resort today. Certainly hurt their depth and ball handling as Houde (who's also their tallest player) has done much of the ball handling.
12:45 Update - Alvirne v Newport
Alvirne up big at the half 44-21 with Alex Wetmore leading Alvirne with 10 and Andrew Houde chipping in 11 of the 21 for Newport.  Defenisively they are having a hard time staying with the athletisim of Alvirne who's had quite a few easy oppourtunities at the rim.
1:10 Update - Alvirne v Newport
Wetmore has continued his solid outing in the 3rd quarter hitting a mid-range jumper a drive in the lane and getting the line several times.  Sr. PG Tommy O'Hearn has shown the ability to manage the Broncos and make good decisions on the offensive.  He's a craft point guard who won't blow by anyone but can protect the ball and distribute as needed.
For Newport Spencer Coronis has done a good job against the Alvirne pressure and made a nice drive and spin in the lane to score late in the 3rd.  After 3, Alvirne leads 690-39.
1:25 Update - Alvirne v Newport
First game in the books, Alvirne was dominant.  They had contributions from their entire team as did Newport.  Both teams used their full benches and clearly were working on various sets.  Alvirne was just a little too big, a little too athletic and more polished at this point of the early season.  Alvirne wins 85-54.
Lebanon plays Spaulding in the next one...
1:45 Update - Lebanon v Spaulding
Good game early as both Spaulding and Lebanon are trading baskets.  Dom Morrill made an impressive dribble-drive around two defenders Spaulding has been looking to push the ball and score in transition or on the secondary break.  SR PF Charlie Nevejans has shown some improved post moves that should give Spaulding a nice size advantage in the paint this season.
Spaulding leads 13-10 after 1.
2:30 Update - Lebanon v Spaulding
Darian Berry and Spaulding has pushed the lead in the 2nd with 2 corner 3's.  With Lebanon pressuring full court its opened up some passing and shooting lanes for their wings.  Midway through the 2nd Spaulding put a lineup in that included JR Anthony Ciccotelli and the aforementioned Nevejans who with their size were able to pick and role and give guys like Quinn Connelly jumpers from the wing.
The duo of Sophomore guard Austin Whaley and the Senior Morrill should be the catalyst for a Lebanon team will probably be undersized against most opponents this year.  Freshman KJ Matte has shown a nice stroke as well.
At halftime, Spaulding has the lead 39-25.
Lebanon came out from the half looking to cut into the lead with Sr. Captain Kalin Sou hitting back to back threes then forcing a 5 second turnover on the ensuing inbounds.  Spaulding though is right back to what has been successful in pounding it in to their bigs while taking timely jumpers.
With 2:45 left its 47-33 Spaulding.
3:00 Update - Lebanon v Spaulding
Lebaon made a nice little run to end the third with a layup, steal and layup by Sou and top of the key 3 on a broken playboy Morrill to cut the lead to 5.  Another Sou 3 in the corner with 7 seconds to play to cut the lead to 1 with 1 quarter to play.
This game quickly went from a blowout to a very tightly contested game and the energy on the court showed it. Another Sou three followed by a Berry long 3 kept this game tied.  The Spaulding offense has frequently started with Berry and ended with either Ciccotelli or Nevejans but its clear he's the guy in the offense when they need something to happen.
Same can definitely be said Sou for Lebanon who is not shy about finding his shot, and the way he squares his body there aren't many bad ones in his arsenal. The other guy for Lebanon is definitely Morrill who as I said earlier is probably their biggest player but can hit the 3 as well.  He does most his work facing the basket and on the wing in Lebanon's 4 or 5 out motion offense.
Lebanon took the lead with 17 seconds on a mid range jumper and following a time out Spauldings Nevejans was fouled going to the hoop.  He missed both and Lebanon pulled out a 64-63 win in an excellent back and forth game.
3:25 Update - Portsmouth v Bedford
Heavy hitters are on the floor for the 3rd game as Bedford and Portsmouth face off.  Portsmouth is playing without Donovan Phanor who's nursing two tender ankles from football season, but he's expected back early in the season.
Bedfrod was able to keep Portsmouth scoreless until De'Vonn Wilson-Miles showed some nice range hitting a 3 from the top of the key.  Bedfords got a distinct size advantage and has used that to jump out to a 10-4 lead midway through the 1st. With multiple ball handlers who can penetrate and dish they're able to draw defenders which is leaving their bigs available.
With 2 minutes left and down 4 PHS put on their press which ultimately led to an open corner 3 for Bedford.  Its been a foul-laden 1st quarter which has helped give Bedford a 17-9 lead after 1.
3:50 Update - Portsmouth v Bedford
For all that Portsmouth lacks in size and playmakers against this Bedford team they are winning the battle of the ball.  They're on the floor, and going after every 50/50 like its their last.  Not only that, but if your an offensive player and not using your body to protect the ball the Clipper defenders are going to make it miserable trying to get anywhere on the court.  They have quick hands and are up in your grill before you can make a decision.
Portsmouth's SR big man Pat Glynn has showed a nice inside/out game.  he's done a good job controlling the paint and keeping the Bedford bigs in check in the 2nd quarter.
This has definitely been the most physical game of the day so far and refs are letting the play for the most part.  Also good that this is the first time we've mentioned the officials the entire jamboree.  Its their pre-season too after all and they're doing a great job supporting this event.
P.S. - This is the last game we'll be Live Blogging today unfortunatley...tune in to Twitter for more updates from Dave. We'll also have a recap article and highlights the first part of the week.
4:30 Update - Portsmouth v Bedford
Third quarter went back and forth with Bedford maintaining a double digit lead through most of the second half.  Bedford's got a nice combination of kids that can handle the ball, shooters and big men.  Portsmouth played hard and definitely have some pieces with the Glynn brothers down low Wilson-Miles and Phanor when he comes back from his injury.
Bedford controlled this one the entire way winning 65-52.
Signing off for the day...
