Kabongo Ngalakulondi and Memorial will take on Lebanon

We announced the match-ups for the Second Annual NHsportspage Coaches for a Cause Pre-season Basketball Jamboree, hosted by Alvirne High school, on Saturday mornings ‘McIsaac on Sports’ show on WTSN.

If you’d like to listen to the announcement and the usual shenanigans that come with McIsaac & I doing virtually anything together here is a link to that audio:

The idea behind the event is to have eight of the top teams from Division I New Hampshire high school basketball face off against eight of the top Division II, Division III & Division IV programs in a game their fans can attend like a regular season game. This is a two day event that will raise money for the New Horizons homeless shelter in Manchester and serve as the tip-off event for the 2013-14 boys basketball season.

Last season’s event was attended by over 1,500 people and the final two games between Manchester Central/Conant & Trinity/Pembroke Academy were played in front of near capacity crowds with Pete Tarrier calling the play by play and Justin McIsaac announcing each of the eight games from courtside.

The teams and the match-ups were selected by Kevin Bonney, Pete Tarrier and I while Dave Keefe has been a contributor to the event as well.

Admission will be $5 to attend the block of games on each day.

Now on to the match-ups;

Games to be played Friday night December 5th at Alvirne High school

 5 pm: Londonderry vs. Coe-Brown

The Lancers are coming off a 14-4 season in which they advanced to the Division I quarterfinals under first year head coach Nate Stanton. The Lancers will feature all-state point guard Cody Ball while Hall of Fame head coach David Smith’s Bears return several starters for a program that has reached the Division II Final four two of the past three years.

6:30 pm: Goffstown vs. Sunapee

Ed Tenney’s Sunapee Lakers become the first Division IV team to be invited to the jamboree as they return their all-state backcourt of point guard Matt Tenney and shooting guard Issaiah Chappell. Goffstown nearly toppled Lebanon in last year’s opening round and will be one of the best perimeter shooting teams in a wide open Division II race.

8:00 pm: Alvirne vs. Manchester West

Seth Garon’s Broncos will renew acquaintances with Danny Bryson’s Manchester West team as West moves on to Division II. Alvirne easily beat Division III Newport in the only lopsided game of the jamboree a year ago and now faces off against a West team ready to make a run back to Durham for the first time in over a decade.

Games to be played on Saturday December 6th at Alvirne High School

12 Noon: Trinity vs. Pelham

Great match-up to open day two as Trinity takes on Division III Pelham (we all need to get used to that..). The Pioneers will be led by their first year head coach Matt Lemieux and a new cast that will have to replace four starters off of a 2014 Final Four team. Matt Regan’s Pelham team features scoring machine Keith Brown at forward and shooting guard Ryan Cloutier.

1:30: Bishop Guertin vs. Berlin

Jim Migneault’s BG team will be one of the best teams in Division I this season and are led by a balanced attack that includes big man Kyle Gavin and much improved point guard Jack Zimmerman. Don Picard’s Berlin team will go toe to toe with the Division I powerhouse with seven returning contributors from a Final Four team that took Conant to the wire at Southern New Hampshire University.

3:00: Manchester Memorial vs. Lebanon

Kieth Matte’s Raiders wanted a big time test from Jack Quirk’s Manchester Memorial Crusaders and they get it in the middle game Saturday afternoon. Memorial will be one of the most exciting teams in New Hampshire this season behind Trevon Maughn and Kabongo Ngalakulondi, two players who can score from anywhere on the floor. Lebanon is coming off back to back Final Four appearances and will again contend for the title behind super-sophomore point guard K.J Matte and Austin Whaley.

4:30: Pembroke Academy vs. Conant

Check the 17:30 mark of the radio show linked above for the dramatic, some would say slightly over the top, announcement of this one but we’re very excited to have Matt Alosa’s Pembroke Spartans back in the jamboree. The Spartans frontcourt of Dominic Timbas (6’5), Rob Wilson (6’5) and Max Curran (6’8) will be the biggest in the state and 6’5 guard Dante Timbas even provides size in the backcourt.

6:00: Manchester Central vs. Portsmouth

Two of the top programs in the state clash in the finale of our two day event. David ‘Doc’ Wheeler’s defending champions will be led by all-state shooting guard Joey Martin. Jim Mulvey’s Clippers, who annually contend for the Division II title, will be led by forwards Charlie Lehoux and Joey Glynn.

We’ll have more details as we get closer to the event but the teams and match-ups are set. We’re excited to bring you all the highlights & coverage in the coming months.
