The final Top 10 until September!

We don't like Syracuse either, kid.

This is it! The last Top 10 of 2017-2018, so drink it in, kids. As always, there are the Top 10 things that rattled around in Justin McIsaac's brain this week...

10. THIS WAS THE BEST D2 AND D1 WEEK POSSIBLY EVER

An instant classic on Monday and on Wednesday night, with two pretty damn good games on the back end of those classics, then an #11 seed taking the kings of NH down to the wire, and a rebounding performance for the ages in the last game of the season. Give me this every year and I’ll die happy. What a week!

9. I WANT A PITTSFIELD V NEWMARKET 7 GAME SERIES

The teams split the regular season matchups, and then Pittsfield hung on in the Finals to win their first D4 Crown (and avenging their 1981 OT loss to the Mules in the Class M title game). These teams were so fun to watch play each other that I think we need a 2-2-1-1-1 format to settle this.

8. IT’S 6 FOR SOMERSWORTH

The Hilltoppers brought home their 6th Boys title, a night after winning the rubber match against Berlin (btw, I know it couldn’t really be helped but I would’ve loved to see Somersworth-Berlin 3 somewhere in the middle, rather than 2.75 hours from Berlin). It was a dominant performance down the stretch, as Bryton Early and company erased an early deficit to bring it home in style. It was the first title for Somersworth since 2011, and there were some leeeeean years in between, so this one must feel good.

7. HOLLIS BROOKINE CAVS >>>> CLEVELAND CAVS

Titles in Boys and Girls hoop for HB, and both teams had to hold off real Cinderellas to take home their crowns. The Cavalier girls need to thwart the 13 seed John Stark Generals, and the HB Boys played what was essentially a road game in Durham against Oyster River. I’d much rather watch the Hollis Brookline Cavs then Cleveland, but I might be biased.

BTW, they don't keep rebound records (as far as I know), but Matt Simco's 19 boards in the finals vs ORHS must be a record, right?!?

6. AS I’M WRITING THIS, UMBC IS LEADING KANSAS STATE

Max Curran and UMBC vs Wenyen Gabriel and Kentucky in the Sweet 16? Just like we drew it up. My brackets are always trash by noon on the first Friday, so I just root for upsets, so I’m loving this tourney.

5. I FEEL LIKE WE SHOULD TALK ABOUT HOW FUN PEMBROKE WAS

Most of the time, if you lose in the Semi-Finals, people don’t talk about how good your season was, but this Pembroke squad was a joy to watch. Noah Cummings and Jake Sherman were both nearly heroes in the epic Overtime game against Oyster River, and Rich Otis’ crew should feel good about the year they had.

4. CRYING KIDS

Someone at CBS must’ve had a reeeeeeeeeeeeeallly bad childhood, since whenever a team takes an L, the director starts looking for bawling 11 year olds. You know what what types of losses kids about? LITERALLY ALL OF THEM. If I wanted to see kids cry, I’d tell my own children how much it’s going to cost them to go to college.

3. OYSTER RIVER’S RUN

Lorne Lucas took over Oyster River, and it’s been a bit slower going than you might’ve hoped if you were a Bobcat fan to get the ship turned around, but those of us that know Lorne Lucas knew it was just a matter of time. He was able to get this years team to play the way he likes his teams to, gritty, and tough. And the result was an incredible win in the semi-finals that will be talked about for years to come, and very bright future. Oyster River has traditionally been a team to reckon with, and that’s the case moving forward for ORHS. I expect next March to be #ManBunSZN once again.

2. 11 SEED AND A DREAM

Dover’s run to the finals was the stuff of movies that have 2 or more montages with inspirational music. Going on the road to beat Londonderry shortly after a key player suffered a tragedy, it would’ve been easy to fall flat, but it was on to Bedford. The Bulldogs were a favorite to get back to Durham, if not to win it all, DHS made it to Durham, where they had to face a wildly good Exeter team. Most team show up at UNH and can’t put the ball in the bucket, but Ty Vitko lit up the scoreboard en route to a wild win.

And In the title game, it seemed like the entire Garrison City was in the bleachers for what turned out to be a pulse pounding championship game that saw Dover draw within two of the defending champs with 2 minutes to go. Not all fairy tales have happy endings, but Dover’s ride to the finals is the stuff of legends.

1. WHEN THE CHIPS WERE DOWN, WHO ELSE BUT CODY GRAHAM?

Portsmouth had to sink their free throws late in the aforementioned contest against Dover to secure the 21st title in school history, 2nd straight D1 title, and 3rd straight overall. That might be a ton of weight on your shoulders if you’re anyone but Cody Graham, who started as a Freshman, and never stop getting buckets en route to become PHS’s all time leading scorer.

Sam Natti put it best during the broadcast of the title game when he said something to the effect of “This is a pretty even game, but Portsmouth can look at Cody and know everything’s going to be fine”, and damn if that isn’t how the game played out. I’m biased since I’m good friends with his dad, but I think Cody Graham is one of the best we’ve seen play NH HS basketball.

0. BONUS!

Just some other random thoughts:

  • If this is really it for Jim Mulvey, he’s on the Mt Rushmore of NH HS Coaches regardless of sport.
  • Merrimack Valley was a ton of fun to watch play at Durham
  • Oyster River’s students arrived 70 minutes before the semi-final and were already going nuts
  • Cody Morrisette is the newest member of the "You hope your daughter ends up marrying a kid like that" team. (Donovan Phanor is the captain)
  • The D2 D1 final four should always be at Lundholm, never at the Whitt
  • That being said, bring the Q-Finals back to Lundholm too!
  • Even though it didn’t happen, I love that the ORHS kids were chanting “we want Benny” in the Q-Finals, hoping to get Coe-Brown at Durham
  • As Mayor of the Seacoast, I’ve officially annexed Pittsfield as a Seacoast school, since they don’t really fit into any other region in NH
  • KEVIN HEBERT IS BACK AS SPAULDING FOOTBALL COACH LET’S GOOOOOOOOOOOOO
  • The UNH Crew does an amazing job every year, big shout out to Mike Murphy, Brandon Poli, and the whole staff

ALSO RECEIVING VOTES: Jen Chick-Ruth was right about BG Girls Basketball, The Dover Dinosaur was a home run, Can’t believe the season is over all ready
